Starting point is 00:00:00 How did the internet go from this? You could actually find what you were looking for right away, bound to this. I feel like I'm in hell. Spoiler alert, it was not an accident. I'm Cory Doctorow, host of Who Broke the Internet from CBC's Understood. In this four-part series, I'm going to tell you
Starting point is 00:00:20 why the internet sucks now, whose fault it is, and my plan to fix it. Find Who Broke the Internet on whatever terrible app you get your podcasts. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. A new session of Parliament begins today with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Polyev ready to get to work. This is one of the most rapid returns to Parliament in Canadian history, and it will be one of the most busy returns to Parliament in Canadian history.
Starting point is 00:00:59 And while we narrowly missed forming government, we now have every duty to fight for change. Of course, Pierre Poliev won't be allowed in the House of Commons, having lost his seat in the April election. The first order of business today will be the election of a new Speaker of the House. Six candidates are in the running, including former Speaker Greg Fergus. Meanwhile, King Charles and Queen Camilla touched down in Ottawa today. They are spending two days in the nation's capital, with the king delivering the speech from the throne tomorrow. Nicole Williams has more. I love the royals.
Starting point is 00:01:32 I love everything royal. Derek Sakely is a self-proclaimed royal superfan, and he's got an impressive collection to prove it. Mugs, plates, dolls, you name it, all commemorating the British monarchy. And he's one of many in Ottawa hoping for a chance to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla while they're here. I have like my King Charles flags ready to wave, getting some friends together. We're gonna go down and hopefully see them live for the first time. It will be their first visit to Canada as King and Queen,
Starting point is 00:02:07 though not their first visit to Ottawa. In fact, Charles and Camilla were here just three years ago. First, the King and Queen will attend a public event in downtown Ottawa. Then there will be a horse-drawn carriage ride through the downtown as they head to the Senate building. Lastly, they'll stop at the National War Memorial to pay their respects. Nicole Williams, CBC News, Ottawa. After bombarding Ukraine with hundreds of drones and missiles over the weekend,
Starting point is 00:02:37 Russian President Vladimir Putin is now facing harsh criticism from an unlikely source. U.S. President Donald Trump. Dominic Vilaitis explains. facing harsh criticism from an unlikely source, US President Donald Trump. Dominic Vellaitis explains. US President Donald Trump's patience, it seems, is growing thin with Russia's Vladimir Putin following this weekend's uptick in violence in Ukraine. I don't know what the hell happened to Putin. I've known him a long time, always gotten along with him, but he's sending rockets into cities
Starting point is 00:03:04 and killing people and I don't like it at all. Trump told reporters he was now seriously considering hitting Russia with more sanctions and later on Truth Social he doubled down saying Putin had gone absolutely crazy and warned that any attempt to conquer all of Ukraine would lead to Russia's downfall. Last night Russia attacked Ukraine with hundreds of drones and missiles for the third night in a row, just the day after Moscow launched its biggest aerial attack of the war so far, killing at least 12 people, including children.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Dominic Velaitis for CBC News, Riga, Latvia. Health officials in Gaza say more than 50 people were killed overnight in the latest round of Israeli airstrikes. That's emergency workers pulling people from the rubble of a destroyed school. It was being used as a shelter and it's being reported that more than 30 people were killed in that facility while they slept. The Israeli military is saying it was targeting Hamas militants who had been operating in the building.
Starting point is 00:04:15 An Ontario man is being sentenced today after pleading guilty to stealing an iconic portrait of Winston Churchill. Geoffrey Wood admits to stealing the portrait by renowned photographer Joseph Karsh. Police say it was stolen four years ago from the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa. It was taken over the Christmas holidays and replaced with a fake. The portrait of Britain's former Prime Minister was recovered after a lengthy international investigation and is back again in the hotel lobby. And that is The World This Hour.
