Starting point is 00:00:42 Quebec Liberal MP Francis Scarpelegia has been elected Speaker of the House of Commons. Picking a new Speaker is the first order of business for MPs taking their seats following the election. Scarpelegia is expected to preside over a brief but busy Spring Parliamentary session. Evan Dyer has more. It is the Member for Lac-Saint-Louis. Thanks to Scarpelegia was selected from a field that originally included six Liberals, two Conservatives and a green. Some conservatives had seen Fergus as too partisan for the role. Scarpelegia appealed for tolerance. Scarpelegia said he hoped to see more decorum in this session and that while the U.S. increasingly resembles imperial Rome, he said Canada should try to be more like an Athenian democracy. The royal couple is on a brief visit to Canada, less than 24 hours in all, but it will include Charles delivering the throne speech Tuesday. That will take place in the Senate chamber. The man who stole a Winston Churchill portrait from Ottawa's Chateau Laurier is headed for jail. Geoffrey Wood pleaded guilty to three charges in March. The original was discovered in Italy last year. Wood's lawyers tell CBC he will appeal the sentence. An Ontario judge has approved a $500 million settlement over a scheme to fix the price of bread. The class action lawsuit was brought against Loblaw and parent company George Weston Limited. Plaintiffs say during a 16-year period, at least $1.50 was added to the price of a loaf. The approval of the settlement means millions of Canadians will now be able to receive a slice. Alberta is looking to ensure only what it considers age-appropriate

Police in Liverpool say they have arrested a 53-year-old British man after a car plowed into a large crowd of soccer fans. They were out celebrating their club's Premier League title. Prime Minister Keir Starmer calls it an appalling scene, adding his thoughts are with all those injured or affected. Police say they are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision.
