Every time I come to Canada, a little more of Canada seeps into my bloodstream. King Charles began the speech repeating his admiration for Canada while acknowledging the moment we are living in. Many Canadians are feeling anxious and worried about the drastically changing world. Those worries, the cost of living, climate change, war, and Canada's relationship with the U.S. The Prime Minister and the President of the United States, for example, have begun defining
Starting point is 00:01:18 a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the United States, rooted in mutual respect and founded on common interests to deliver transformational benefits for both sovereign nations. The King acknowledged there's lots to fix in Canada as well, like creating a stronger and affordable economy and re-arming and reinvesting in the Canadian Armed Forces. Canada's oldest company will close its doors for good on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:02:16 The closure of Hudson's Bay Company stores across Canada will put thousands out of work, and most will walk away empty-handed. Jamie Strashan reports. More than 8,000 BAE employees will be terminated when the company ceases operations on Sunday. It's the largest single job loss in Canada since Sears went out of business in 2018. Employee benefits, including long-term disability, will be mostly cut by the middle of June. Also, the BAE won't be paying its employees any severance directly. At a rally today, Margaret Henry, an employee for 12 years, says that makes the end even more painful. Employees are the ones bringing the company their money and yet we are left behind. Employees could collect some money through a government subsidy program. The company filed
Starting point is 00:03:02 for bankruptcy protection in March. After it was unable to secure funding to keep its nearly 100 stores afloat, it began a chain-wide liquidation process. Earlier this month, Canadian Tire purchased HBC's intellectual property, ensuring the company's iconic stripes and coat of arms will live on. Jamie Strash in CBC News, Toronto. The Calgary company at the centre of a large E. coli outbreak has been fined $10,000. Hundreds of children fell ill at various daycares across the city in 2023. The commercial kitchen company Fueling Mines pleaded guilty in April to four bylaw offenses.
Starting point is 00:03:39 An investigation found the outbreak was likely tied to meatloaf. The organization, tasked by Israel to hand out aid in Gaza says its distribution site has been overrun by people. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says its team had to pull back to avoid casualties. But other aid groups are boycotting the U.S.-backed initiative. They accuse Israel of putting conditions on who has the right to access aid. Jens Larga is spokesperson for the UN aid coordination office. It is a distraction from what is actually needed.
Starting point is 00:04:14 We need opening of more crossings. We need all types of aid, not aid that is cherry picked by the Israeli side that we are allowed to get in. The chief of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation resigned on Sunday, saying he could not implement Israel's plan in line with principles of neutrality and independence.
