Starting point is 00:00:34 From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. Manitoba has declared a state of emergency. Thousands of people in several First Nations have all been told they need to leave their homes. Hot and dry conditions are fueling wildfires across the prairies. Another 5,000 residents who live in the northern city of Flintlawn are being ordered to evacuate by midnight. Cameron McIntosh reports. Forest firefighters rapidly retreating from a wall of flames near Creighton, Saskatchewan. Just over the border in Flintlawn, Manitoba, resident Elsa Adelurda watched the same fire. Now she's on her way out. An evacuation order issued for the whole community. About 5,000 people told to be out by midnight.
Starting point is 00:01:22 This wildfire, now Manitoba's top of many firefighting priorities, started in a landfill in neighboring Crichton. The fire changed pretty radically. Frustrated, Manitoba premier Wab Knew says on Tuesday, water bombers couldn't hit it because of a civilian drone. Somebody's flying a drone to try and get some video footage for their TikTok, which is just inexcusable right now. Manitoba has had Canada's worst fires so far this year, at nearly 200,000 hectares,
Starting point is 00:01:49 already burning triple the usual area of a regular fire season. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Winnipeg. Mark Carney has made his first appearance in question period as prime minister. Opposition leader Andrew Scheer stood in for party leader Pierre Poliev. He wasted no time in attacking Carney, questioning the effectiveness of Canadian tariffs imposed on U.S. goods. Carney shot back. Our tariffs have maximum impact on the United States, minimum impact on Canada, and we are
Starting point is 00:02:19 dedicating all the revenues from those tariffs to supporting the workers and businesses affected by the unjustified American actions. The opposition also grilled Carney on the delay to presenting the government's budget. The leader of a human smuggling plot connected to a family that froze to death near the U.S.-Canada border has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. A Minnesota court convicted Indian national Harshkumar Patel on charges of bringing unauthorized people into the U.S. and profiting from it. In January 2022, the bodies of an Indian family were discovered in a Manitoba field not far from the border. Florida resident
Starting point is 00:02:56 Steve Shan has also been sentenced to six and a half years for acting as a driver in Patel's smuggling operation. Canada's agriculture minister says Ottawa is taking all facts into consideration after pressure from the United States to spare a herd of BC ostriches. U.S. Health Secretary John F. Kennedy Jr. is one of several prominent officials asking Canada to halt a call order. Brady Strachan reports. It's the latest twist in the story of the universal ostrich farm. Since last December, the farmers have been fighting to save their birds after the Canadian
Starting point is 00:03:29 Food Inspection Agency ordered they be culled because of avian flu concerns. Now, high profile members of the Trump administration are weighing in, including Dr. Mehmet Oz and Health Secretary R.F.K. Jr., who asked Canadian officials not to cull the birds. Also joining the charge, U.S. billionaire John Katsomatidis. Former Prime Minister Harper is a good friend of mine. I was on the phone with him asking him his advice
Starting point is 00:03:53 of how I can handle, and all we want is common sense. On Wednesday, Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald addressed the situation. So we're taking all the facts into consideration. We'll move forward the best possible solution for everybody involved. When pressed if his ministry would proceed with the call, McDonald said not necessarily, adding there is due process to follow. Brady Strachan, CBC News, Kelowna. Canada Post says it's lost $1.3 billion in 2024. It's blaming some of its losses on last year's labour dispute. But a big chunk,
Starting point is 00:04:25 $800 million, is from lower revenue. Letter mail deliveries continue to decline and competing carriers are capturing a bigger share of parcel delivery.
