From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fague. There may be more global trade chaos in the days ahead. A federal court in the U.S. has blocked the bulk of President Donald Trump's tariffs,
Starting point is 00:00:45 rejecting the rationale of a national emergency. The ruling orders a temporary halt on some tariffs on Canada. The Trump administration has already filed an appeal. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's time as advisor with the Trump administration is over. The billionaire entrepreneur announced on his ex-platform tonight that he is leaving his job with the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOJ. The White House confirms Musk's departure. Musk's tenure, originally considered to be temporary, was best described as turbulent with thousands of government workers fired as part of efforts
Starting point is 00:01:20 to cut federal spending. But a judge recently extended a block on Trump's mass layoffs of those federal workers. To Manitoba. This is the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people's living memory. Premier Wab Kinew says the state of emergency is now in place to respond to the wildfire crisis. More than 17,000 people are being ordered to evacuate.
Starting point is 00:01:46 That includes several First Nations and the northern city of Flintlawn. Canoe says it has a message for those evacuees. This is a moment of fear and uncertainty. But I want to tell you that your fellow Manitobans will welcome you. We will get through this difficult period and we'll get through this trying period the way that we always do by working together. Canoe says the majority of evacuees will head to Winnipeg to be housed at large facilities, including arenas. The premier added that the prime minister, Mark Carney, has accepted the province's request for the Canadian Armed Forces to step in and help. Thousands of people across Alberta and Saskatchewan are also out of their homes because of the growing threat of wildfires.
Starting point is 00:02:32 The ringleader of an international smuggling plot linked to the death of migrants near the US-Canada border has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. In January of 2022, a family of four from India froze to death while trying to enter the U.S. along a remote stretch of Manitoba. Indian national Harshkumar Patel was convicted of bringing unauthorized people into the U.S. for profit. The driver of the smuggling plot, Florida resident Steve Shand, received a six and a half year sentence. Lisa Kirkpatrick is acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota. These defendants knew it was cold.
Starting point is 00:03:10 In fact, they knew it was life threateningly cold. But they didn't care. What they cared about was money and their callous indifference to the value of human life cost a family of four their lives. Kirkpatrick says the sentencing sends a message that human life does not have a price tag. Israel confirms the killings of Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar, the brother of the previous leader Yahya
Starting point is 00:03:35 Sinwar. Eliminating Hamas is part of Israel's stated goal in the war in Gaza. The United Nations and others have said the cost of that mission in human lives is too high. Sasa Petrusic reports. Angry and hungry, crowds of Palestinians continued to scramble for food with the World Food Program reporting that a court had broken into its warehouse in the south with at least two people reported dead. Others in Gaza said it was impossible to get badly needed food aid amid a situation UN officials have described as a near famine. It led to an emotional debate at the UN Security Council, with Palestinian representative Riyad Mansour breaking down in tears
Starting point is 00:04:21 over children dying of starvation. I have grandchildren. I know what they mean to their families. Israel blames Hamas militants for unrest over aid and its need to keep fighting.
