From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Chileanne Hazel Wood. Wildfires on the prairies are causing chaos for communities in northern regions. Thousands are fleeing their homes
Starting point is 00:00:44 to escape the advancing flames. Sam Sampson has the latest. Flynn Flawn City Councillor Alison Dallas Funk wants people still in the community to get out. This is a mandatory evacuation. We will not be able to find you if you do not leave. The northern Manitoba community is among several under evacuation order. About 17,000 people in total are fleeing to Winnipeg. On Wednesday night in Saskatchewan, three First Nations declared a joint state of emergency, demanding meetings with Premier Scott Moe and others in power looking for help. Thousands of
Starting point is 00:01:15 people have been forced to leave their homes in those northern region communities. And in Alberta, a community of about 1,300 people north of Edmonton, has been forced to evacuate due to a raging fire. Those people went elsewhere, but the province's capital is ready. Edmonton built a semi-permanent evacuation site this year, ready to welcome anybody fleeing these disasters. The site has not yet been triggered, but hot and dry conditions are known to change things quickly. Sam Sampson, CBC News, Edmonton.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Prime Minister Mark Carney is applauding a US trade court ruling that pauses many of Donald Trump's tariffs. Mr. Speaker, the government welcomes yesterday's decision by the US Court of International Trade which is consistent with Canada's long-standing position that the US IEPA tariffs were unlawful as well as unjustified. Not long after Carney's speech in the Commons, a second U.S. court also ruled against the Trump tariffs. The White House says it's appealing those rulings, calling them judicial overreach.
Starting point is 00:02:15 The rulings don't apply to tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and automobiles. Israel says it will establish 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. It marks the largest expansion in the territory in decades. Palestinian officials are slamming the decision, calling it a dangerous escalation that harms the pathway to a future Palestinian state. Sasha Petrasek reports. Fields burn in the occupied West Bank as Palestinian villagers blame Israeli settlers for an overnight attack. Al-Mukhair village is surrounded by Israeli outposts, new settlements in the making. The aim is displacement, says village councillor Marzouk Abunaym. Settlers say our village should not exist. The attacks have
Starting point is 00:03:06 increased sharply here since the Gaza war started. Now those outposts are getting formal recognition by the Israeli government as it also announced the creation of 22 new Jewish settlements. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotryk calls it another step toward sovereignty over the West Bank. Most countries consider the settlements illegal, with Canada threatening sanctions against Israel if they are expanded. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Toronto. Excitement is building ahead of Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.
Starting point is 00:03:42 The Edmonton Oilers are the only Canadian team left, and they're leading the series 3 to 1. Julia Wong reports. The Edmonton Oilers practice inside a Dallas arena, gearing up for a pivotal game five. Just out of superstition, I feel like I'll stay home and watch it on TV. But Oilers super fan Curtis Craig won't be at the rink to cheer them on.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Craig is from Alberta Alberta and he lives in Dallas but he says the team does better when he isn't in the building. For good luck he wears the same pants and watches games from the same spot on the couch. Craig says there's a part of him that wishes he could be at the game tonight. It's just for the best. I've been in the rink when the Oilers have won other playoff series, like way back in the 90s. It's been a long time, but I think it's just important for me to enjoy it from home and
Starting point is 00:04:32 wish them good luck. The Oilers have won the last three games of the series. The puck drops tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern. Julia Wong, CBC News, Dallas, Texas. And that is Your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
