Starting point is 00:00:00 The election may be over, but that certainly doesn't mean things are settled on Parliament Hill, and that gives At Issue a lot to talk about. I'm Rosemary Barton, CBC's Chief Political Correspondent, and every week I'm joined by three of Canada's top political journalists, Chantelle Baer, Andrew Coyne, and Althea Raj, to help you understand what's at stake as the Liberals settled in for another minority and the Conservatives try to hold them to account. Follow At Issue as we break down the biggest stories in Canadian politics. New podcasts every Friday.
Starting point is 00:00:32 From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. Saskatchewan is the latest province to declare a state of emergency over wildfires. Premier Scott Moe says he wants to prepare communities in his province for what may be ahead, especially with continuing hot, dry weather. the province. The province is in a state of emergency over wildfires. Premier Scott Moe says he wants to prepare communities in his province for what may be ahead, especially with continuing hot, dry weather.
Starting point is 00:00:50 It's a very serious situation that we are faced with in Saskatchewan. We do need some rainfall. We need that sooner rather than later. In light of that not being in the forecast, we most certainly are putting in place every measure possible to prepare our province, prepare our communities, and prepare those that live in our northern communities that are threatened
Starting point is 00:01:09 by these wildfires in the days ahead. Fire officials estimate eight blazes are burning out of control in the northern part of the province. The biggest one, 216,000 hectares. Several communities have already been evacuated. Premier Mo says Saskatchewan officials are working closely with their Manitoba counterparts. That province declared a state of emergency yesterday. Everybody was just scared because we never knew what was going to happen. Gina Malate is one of 5,000 people forced to flee Flynn Flawn, Manitoba. She and her
Starting point is 00:01:39 family drove through the night to make it to Winnipeg calling the trip nerve-wracking. She's now looking for a place to stay. The Flynn Flawn fire has grown to about 20,000 hectares but officials say it has not yet crossed into the city. The tariff seesaw continues in the US. Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs suspended less than a day ago are back in effect. A federal trade court had ruled the president's trade war was an overreach of his authority, and the levies imposed on much of the world must be dropped. Now, an appeals court stayed that decision while it considers the motion filed by the U.S. government. It means the Trump tariffs remain in place for now.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Israel says it will establish 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. It marks the largest expansion in the territory in decades. Palestinian officials are slamming the decision, calling it a dangerous escalation that harms the pathway to a future Palestinian state. Sasha Petrasek reports. Fields burn in the occupied West Bank as Palestinian villagers blame Israeli settlers for an overnight attack. Al-Mukhair village is surrounded by Israeli outposts, new settlements in the making. The aim is displacement, says village councillor Marzouk Abunaym.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Settlers say our village should not exist. The attacks have increased sharply here since the Gaza war started. Now those outposts are getting formal recognition by the Israeli government as it also announced the creation of 22 new Jewish settlements. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotryk calls it another step toward sovereignty over the West Bank. Most countries consider the settlements illegal, with Canada threatening sanctions against Israel if they are expanded. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Toronto. Excitement is building ahead of Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. The Edmonton
Starting point is 00:03:41 Oilers are the only Canadian team left, and they're leading the series 3-1. Julia Wong reports. The Edmonton Oilers practice inside a Dallas arena, gearing up for a pivotal Game 5. Just out of superstition, I feel like I'll stay home and watch it on TV. But Oilers superfan Curtis Craig won't be at the rink to cheer them on. Craig is from Alberta and he lives in Dallas. But he says the team does better when he isn't in the building. For good luck, he wears the
Starting point is 00:04:10 same pants and watches games from the same spot on the couch. Craig says there's a part of him that wishes he could be at the game tonight. It's just for the best. I've been in the in the rank when the Oilers have won other playoff series, like way back in the 90s. It's been a long time, but I think it's just important for me to enjoy it from home and I wish them good luck. The Oilers have won the last three games of the series.
Starting point is 00:04:35 The puck drops tonight at 8pm Eastern. Julia Wong, CBC News, Dallas, Texas. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
