Other People's Problems Season 5, available now.
From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. Saskatchewan is the latest province to declare a state of emergency. 4,000 people are fleeing their homes in the province as wildfires spread across the prairies. Sam Sampson has this update.
It's a very serious situation that we're faced with in Saskatchewan. That
seriousness is reflected in Premier Scott Moe's decision to declare a
province-wide state of emergency. A move that not only opens up resources but
translates how bad things are as hot, dry conditions continue.
I do fear things are going to deteriorate with the weather that we have ahead of us.
Saskatchewan is getting aircraft from Alaska and Quebec and firefighters from the Maritimes,
but they have yet to make a direct request for military help. In Manitoba, the military is
helping fly evacuees to safer areas, but some leaders say it's been like talking to a wall to
get Ottawa to help. David Monias is the chief of Pamichicamac Cree Nation. fly evacuees to safer areas. But some leaders say it's been like talking to a wall to get
Ottawa to help. David Monias is the chief of Pamichicamac Cree Nation.
I have to push and ask for favors and people to help me. You know, it's a good thing we
have experienced emergency management staff. Shame on you Canada.
CBC News has asked federal officials for a response. Across the prairies, communities
are on edge wondering who might
be next to flee. Sam Samps in CBC News, Edmonton.
In Ontario, Durham Regional Police have issued an emergency alert asking residents to shelter
in place. Police say a woman was killed in Pickering, east of Toronto, and they're searching
for a suspect. Police tell CBC News an elderly woman was stabbed by a man who fled on foot. Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs are back in effect.
It was less than a day ago that a federal trade court ruled the president's
trade war
was an overreach of his authority. Now an appeals court
has decided to reinstate the tariffs while it considers the motion filed by
the US government.
The White House argues the halting of Trump's economic policy would derail months of trade
negotiations.
Spokesperson Caroline Levitt accuses judges of, quote, usurping the authority of President
Trump.
There is a troubling and dangerous trend of unelected judges inserting themselves into
the presidential decision-making process.
America cannot function if President Trump, or any other president for that matter,
has their sensitive diplomatic or trade negotiations railroaded by activist judges.
The initial ruling to halt import taxes did not apply to Trump's other tariffs involving
steel, aluminum, and automobiles. The White House also thanked Elon Musk for his work.
Musk has announced he's leaving his role as senior advisor to Donald Trump.
The billionaire boasted he could cut $2 trillion of what he called government waste, once brandishing
a chainsaw on stage to show how he'd go about it.
He downsized government agencies and initiated thousands of layoffs of civil servants.
Much of that led to legal challenges.
In the end, his cuts fell far short of his stated goal. The White House says the downsizing work will continue.
While excitement is building ahead of game five of the Western Conference
finals, the Edmonton Oilers are the only Canadian team left and they're leading
the series three to one. As Julia Wong reports, the team hits the ice next hour.
The Edmonton Oilers practice inside a Dallas arena gearing up for a pivotal game five.
Just out of superstition I feel like I'll stay home and watch it on TV.
But Oilers super fan Curtis Craig won't be at the rink to cheer them on.
Craig is from Alberta and he lives in Dallas, but he
says the team does better when he isn't in the building. For good luck, he wears
the same pants and watches games from the same spot on the couch. Craig says
there's a part of him that wishes he could be at the game tonight. It's just
for the best. I've been in the rink when the Oilers have one
other playoff series, like way back, you know, in the 90s the Oilers have won another playoff series way back in the
90s.
It's been a long time, but I think it's just important for me to enjoy it from home and
wish them good luck.
The Oilers have won the last three games of the series.
The puck drops tonight at 8pm Eastern.
