This election campaign was supposed to be a sure thing for Pierre Poliev and the federal conservatives.
But Mark Carney's leadership jolted the liberals back to life and to a fourth straight election win.
Now the rookie prime minister has to manage a minority parliament and Donald Trump.
I'm David Cochran and every weekday on Power and Politics we bring you the day's top political stories.
I speak to the people who wield the power and those who seek power.

From CBC News, the world this hour.
I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
We begin with a developing story in Boulder, Colorado.
Local police say several people are being treated for burns after a man allegedly set them on fire. They're not calling it terror, but
FBI Director Cash Patel insists it was a targeted attack. Boulder Police Chief
Steve Redfern describes where it happened. It's a walking pedestrian mall
downtown here. There was a lot of people out. Very beautiful day. There was a group
of pro-Israel people that were there in a peaceful of people out. A very beautiful day. There was a group of pro-Israel
people that were there in a peaceful demonstration. I wouldn't even call it a protest. I believe
that happens frequently down here. They were there in that area. We are looking and actively
interviewing victims and witnesses to determine if that group was targeted or others and we
just don't have those answers yet.
Those protesters were calling for the release of hostages being held in Gaza.
Redfern says it would be irresponsible to speculate on a motive.
A suspect is in custody.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed a permanent chief of staff.
Mark-Andre Blanchard was Canada's ambassador to the United Nations between 2016 and 2020.
He takes over from interim chief of staff Marco Mendicino next month.
Carney met this afternoon with energy executives in Calgary.
He has said he wants Canada to be an energy superpower.
He'll also be addressing this at the First Minister's summit in Saskatoon.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says he wants to hear Carney's ideas.
What I would say our focus is, is yes, let's prioritize some projects.
Let's get them across the line.
But let's also not lose sight of the fact that we need to build a regulatory process
that works for everyone and works for Canadians so that we can attain those aspirations that
Prime Minister Carney has put forward with respect to being the strongest economy in
the G7 and a global energy superpower. Tomorrow's meeting is happening amid the wildfires ravaging the Western provinces.
Mo says Ottawa has been very supportive, but so far he has not asked for federal aid.
Ukraine says more than 100 of its drones destroyed over 40 Russian planes deep inside Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calls it a unique operation.
That's Zelensky during his nightly address to Ukrainians. He says the operation was based
out of an office next to a local branch of Russia's intelligence and security service.
Russia's defense ministry confirms the attacks, which
comes as the two sides meet tomorrow in Turkey for a new round of peace talks. At least 31
people are dead after Israeli tanks reportedly opened fire near an aid center in Gaza.
An ambulance rushed some of the 170 wounded to hospital. Red Cross officials say the crowd
was gathered to receive food in the southern city of Raffa. Witnesses say thousands had
arrived at the aid center, only for Israeli forces to tell them to disperse and come back
later.
Well, it's a new pope upholding a Catholic tradition. Leo repeating the stance that marriage is only between a man and a woman.
He said marriage is not just an ideal and that heterosexual marriage is the foundation of society.
In his first address to world diplomats, the pontiff had already shared his views,
aligning with the Church's position opposing same-sex marriage and abortion.
Pope Leo's comments come as much of the world marks the beginning of Pride Month.
A new library has opened in Riverview, New Brunswick, and this one is for the dogs. They
can pick a stick and take it with them on their walk. The project was Ash Aerosmith's
idea. He says the stick library is not only fun, but it can help keep the dog safe as well.
One of the big positives I think is that if a dog grabs a stick from the library,
they won't have to go off trail to grab a stick from the grass or the forest, which will help with
tick prevention and preventing other diseases that are associated with ticks. So we see that
as you know just an added bonus as well.
Aerosmith says there's no strict enforcement, but he encourages dog owners to help repopulate
the stick library for others to enjoy.
