Starting point is 00:00:00 When a body is discovered 10 miles out to sea, it sparks a mind-blowing police investigation. There's a man living in this address in the name of a deceased. He's one of the most wanted men in the world. This isn't really happening. Officers are finding large sums of money. It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue. So who really is he? I'm Sam Mullins and this is Sea of Lies from CBC's Uncovered, available now.
Starting point is 00:00:34 From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Stephanie Scanderis. Prime Minister Mark Carney and the premiers are in Saskatoon for the First Minister's meeting. It's only the second time Saskatchewan has hosted the meeting. The last was 40 years ago. Carney says this meeting will focus on nation-building projects and improving inter-provincial trade amid U.S. tariff threats.
Starting point is 00:00:56 We're in the process of redefining our relationship with the United States, working very much in partnership around this table in terms of our priorities and how we're defining it but also taking matters very much into our own hands. Carney says he is confident he and the premiers can translate Canada's momentum into action. The defence has finished its case in the trial of five former World Junior Hockey players in London, Ontario. That means no more evidence will be heard and closing arguments can begin. Karen Pauls has the latest. There was some question this morning about whether co-accused Dylan Dubay and Cal Foote would testify in their defense but after
Starting point is 00:01:34 a short break both lawyers said they would not be calling them to the witness box. Last week court heard an audio recording of Dubay's police interview in 2018. It also saw videos of Michael McLeod and Alex Formonton's police interviews. Carter Hart is the only one to testify in this trial. Court has not heard from Foote at all. The men are accused of sexually assaulting a complainant known as EM in a London, Ontario hotel room seven years ago.
Starting point is 00:02:01 The men have all pleaded not guilty. The Crown and Defence will take the rest of the week to prepare their closing statements, which will begin next Monday. The trial is expected to wrap up by next Friday. And then, Justice Maria Karatshia will take some time to come to her verdict. Karen Pauls, CBC News, London, Ontario. Manitoba Premier Wapka News says Ontario has offered up several thousand hotel rooms for wildfire evacuees. Officials say cities including Winnipeg are bursting at the seams with many people sleeping on cots or on the floor. Thousands of people from First Nations communities in Manitoba have had to go as far as Niagara Falls for a vacant bed. Sheena Garak is a volunteer helping evacuees there.
Starting point is 00:02:45 It's pretty sad, it's hard for a lot of people. A lot of them never left the reserve. So just going to Winnipeg was traumatizing for them. They're displaced. And then being told that they have to come out to Ontario, a lot of people were skeptical because it was chaos in Winnipeg. Wildfires have forced 25,000 people out of their homes across the Prairie provinces. After a second round of peace talks, Russia and Ukraine are no closer to reaching a ceasefire, but the hour-long discussion in Istanbul did garner some results. Both sides have agreed to conduct a new prisoner exchange.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Dominic Velaitis reports. The atmosphere at the talks in Turkey was subdued. Ukraine's audacious drone attack on dozens of Russia's nuclear bomber aircraft on Sunday overshadowed proceedings. But both sides did agree to another prisoner swap, which according to Ukraine's defence minister Rustem Umarov, will focus on categories of prisoners rather than numbers. We agreed to exchange all for all, seriously wounded and seriously sick prisoners of war.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Second category is young soldiers who are from 18 to 25 years old, all for all. Both sides also agreed to return the bodies of some 12,000 soldiers. Ukraine has proposed more talks later this month. And although Russia is still refusing Ukraine's demand for a full, unconditional ceasefire, it handed over a memo to the Ukrainian delegation outlining Moscow's terms for a pause in the fighting, which Kyiv says it's now studying. Dominic Vlaisis for CBC News, Riga, Latvia. Israeli forces have killed at least three people near an aid distribution center in southern Gaza.
Starting point is 00:04:27 Local officials and witnesses say dozens of people heading to the center were injured. The military says it fired warning shots at, quote, suspects who approached its forces. The shooting happened at the same location where Israeli forces fired on crowds of people a day earlier.
