Starting point is 00:00:38 Wildfire officials battling flames in Saskatchewan and Manitoba are facing tough days ahead thanks to a lack of rain. More than 30,000 people in the two provinces have evacuated as wildfires continue to threaten their communities. Karen McIntosh reports. Video from La Ronge shows a downtown store burning. Helicopters are dropping water on it as the firefighter shooting the video on the ground realizes the building is lost. Not even doing a damn thing. Jocelyn Theodorth and her daughter left Larrange yesterday, now heartbroken to watch that same video in their car in Prince Albert.
Starting point is 00:01:12 We cry. Hey, that's our home. Across Saskatchewan, 21 fires are burning. More than 400 homes and buildings have been destroyed as the number of evacuees rises. Steve Roberts is with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency. Steve Roberts, Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency We estimate that there is between 10 and 15,000 residents currently displaced.
Starting point is 00:01:32 With the potential for even more evacuation orders, the fire still spreading, still very much out of control. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Prince Albert. He was the first Canadian to travel to space and then rose to the heights of federal politics. Mark Garnot has died. In a statement his wife says he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a short illness. Marina von Stackelberg reports. In 1984, Mark Garnot made history as the first Canadian in space after answering a newspaper ad, a decision he said changed his life.
Starting point is 00:02:09 In an interview with CBC's The House last year, Garnot talked about listening to classical music while aboard the Challenger spaceship. While you're gazing at your planet as you're orbiting high above it and going around is just, it's I think the closest thing to being in heaven. In 2008, Garneau became a Liberal member of parliament, then Minister of Transport and Foreign Affairs. He said he wished all politicians could have the perspective he gained from outer space. We are surrounded by the blackness, the void of space, and that this is not only the
Starting point is 00:02:46 cradle of humanity, it's our only home. And we have to take care of it. Mark Garneau was 76. Marina von Stackelberg, CBC News, Ottawa. The Liberal minority government passed its first confidence test tonight. The speech from the throne has been approved in the House of Commons. Many people voted against it, arguing the speech did not address the priorities of working families. Trade uncertainty is keeping the Bank of Canada from lowering its key interest
Starting point is 00:03:13 rate. The central bank announced the rate will stay at 2.75%. Governor Tiff Macklem says the Canadian economy has weakened slightly. You can definitely see the impact of tariffs, but there is some resilience. The longer these tariffs go on, the longer this uncertainty goes on, the more it's going to weigh on the Canadian economy, the more that is going to put downward pressure on inflation and we will be watching that very carefully. The bank's next rate setting is July 30th. The Stanley Cup final begins this hour and it's a rematch. Sam Sampson has more. Let's go Oilers! Get ready to hear more of this Canada.
Starting point is 00:03:48 The Edmonton Oilers are once again this country's chance at bringing home a Stanley Cup. Should they win, the Oilers would be the first Canadian team to take the trophy in 32 years. The chance to break this dry spell evaded the Oilers last year when the Florida Panthers beat them after seven grueling games. Oilers head coach Chris Knobloch says that history, in a way, is an advantage. They still play the same system, same style. I think it helps us get prepared to play them. Quinn Phillips, co-host of Edmonton-based The Bits podcast, hopes the Oilers can get
Starting point is 00:04:20 a win at home to kick off the final. It is an entirely different series emotionally and physically if the Oilers can get a win at home to kick off the final. It is an entirely different series emotionally and physically if the Oilers can find a way to win one of those first two games because then you're not digging out of a monster hole. Fans hope home ice creates a hot start for the Oilers before heading down to play in Panther territory. Sam Sampson, CBC News, Edmonton. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
