Starting point is 00:00:33 From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. Prime Minister Mark Carney isn't retaliating to President Donald Trump's tariff hike on steel and aluminum imports. He says progress is being made and trade negotiations with the US, but he's still condemning the increase. The latest tariffs on steel and aluminum are unjustified, they're illegal, they're bad for American workers, bad for American industry, and of course for Canadian industry as well. We have counter tariffs and a gross amount before remissions on over 90 billion of US imports. We've acted strong. Those are in place. Carney says Ottawa will retaliate if talks with the US don't progress. Steel and aluminum entering the US is now subject to a 50%
Starting point is 00:01:21 surcharge, double what it was yesterday. The Conservatives are accusing the Liberals of backing off their tough stance adopted during the campaign. They are calling for an emergency debate on the tariffs. Canada's first astronaut in space is dead. Mark Garnot made history in 1984 and later found success in Canadian politics. In a statement, his wife says he died surrounded by his family after a short illness. Marina von Stackelberg reports.
Starting point is 00:01:52 In 1984, Mark Garnot made history as the first Canadian in space after answering a newspaper ad, a decision he said changed his life. In an interview with CBC's The House last year, Garneau talked about listening to classical music while aboard the Challenger spaceship. While you're gazing at your planet as you're orbiting high above it and going around, it's I think the closest thing to being in heaven. In 2008, Garneau became a Liberal member of Parliament, then Minister of Transport and Foreign Affairs. He said he wished all politicians could have the perspective he gained from outer space. We are surrounded by the blackness, the void of space, and that this is not only the cradle
Starting point is 00:02:41 of humanity, it's our only home, and we have to take care of it. Mark Garneau was 76. Marina von Stackelberg, CBC News, Ottawa. Donald Trump says Russia will respond to recent Ukrainian attacks on air bases. He says that message came from Vladimir Putin when the two leaders spoke today. Tension between Ukraine and Russia is rising. Chris Reyes reports. It's the second time the two leaders have spoken in recent weeks following Ukraine's
Starting point is 00:03:11 drone attack on Russia's airfields over the weekend. At a meeting with his government Wednesday, Putin called the attack terrorism. On social media, Trump said Putin told him strongly that Russia will retaliate. Ministers and generals, thank you for standing. Speaking virtually at a meeting with NATO defense ministers in Brussels, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky once again called for a summit and a ceasefire, but also said this. The Russians are not ready for a ceasefire, he said. NATO leaders stood firm in supporting Ukraine, Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Russians are still attacking. This is violence for the sake of violence. Zelensky told NATO leaders to keep the support coming. I urge you to stay fully engaged in building new defense packages for our soldiers. Chris Reyes, CBC News, Washington. Trade uncertainty is keeping the Bank of Canada from lowering its key interest rate. The central bank announced the rate will stay at 2.75 percent. Governor Tiff Macklem says the Canadian economy has weakened slightly.
Starting point is 00:04:20 You can definitely see the impact of tariffs, but there is some resilience. Having said that, look, the longer these tariffs go on, the longer this uncertainty goes on, the more it's going to weigh on the Canadian economy, the more that is going to put downward pressure on inflation, and we will be watching that very carefully. And finally, in hockey news, it's game one tonight of the Stanley Cup final. The Edmonton Oilers are hosting the returning champion Florida Panthers. Right now, Florida is ahead 3-2 after the second period. And that is your World This Hour.
Starting point is 00:04:54 I'm Neal Hurland.
