From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. Prime Minister Mark Carney isn't
retaliating to President Donald Trump's tariff hike on steel and aluminum imports.
He says progress is being made in trade negotiations with the U.S.
But he's still condemning the increase.
The latest tariffs on steel and aluminum are unjustified.
They're illegal.
They're bad for American workers, bad for American industry, and of course for Canadian
industry as well.
Carney says Ottawa will retaliate if talks with the US don't progress.
Steel and aluminum entering the US is now subject to a 50% surcharge.
That's double what it was.
Canada's first astronaut in space is dead.
Marc Arnault made history in 1984 and later found success in Canadian politics.
In a statement, his wife says he died
surrounded by his family after a short illness.
Marina von Stackelberg reports. In 1984 Mark Garnot made history as the first
Canadian in space after answering a newspaper ad. A decision he said changed
his life. And we apologize we don't seem
to have that tape with us right now we'll try to get it for you in a moment
Donald Trump says Russia will respond to recent Ukrainian attacks on air bases he
says that message came from Vladimir Putin when the two leaders spoke
Wednesday tension between Ukraine and Russia is rising. Chris Reyes reports.
It's the second time the two leaders have spoken in recent weeks following Ukraine's
drone attack on Russia's airfields over the weekend.
At a meeting with his government Wednesday, Putin called the attack on Ukraine.
Canada faces calls on multiple fronts to retaliate against the latest US tariff developments.
US President Donald Trump doubled his levies on steel and
aluminum overnight to 50 percent. Canada's steel industry joins the NDP Ontario's premier and even
some Liberal MPs pushing for quick retaliation. Saskatchewan wildfire officials say lots of fire
and wind with no rain is making for an extremely volatile and difficult situation.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency estimates 400 structures have been lost so far.
Wildfires in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba have forced more than 30,000 people to flee
their homes.
Both provinces have declared province-wide states of emergency to better coordinate government help.
Immigration Minister Lina Diab says safeguards for civil rights and due process
have been written into the government's new border bill.
Critics and advocacy groups call the legislation a threat to civil liberties in the immigration and asylum system.
One proposed change would prevent people from making asylum claims if they've been in Canada for more than a year. The government has reported an
increase in the number of international students making asylum claims when their
visas expire. Via Rail blames a drop in its on-time performance on new speed
rules from CN Rail. On-time performance is defined as trains pulling into the station within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival times.
Via says that happened just 30% of the time, plummeting from 72% in the same period the year before.
CEO Mario Pellequin blames CN speed restrictions on Via's busiest corridors, but February's heavy snowfall
was also likely a factor.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she invited Prime Minister Mark Carney to watch the Edmonton
Oilers Stanley Cup game tonight.
Smith says she's still waiting to see if Carney will join her for game five, which could happen
next weekend before the G7 conference in Alberta.
And finally, we've got some breaking hockey news from Edmonton.
The Edmonton Oilers have just beaten the Florida Panthers 4-3 in overtime to win Game 1 of
their Stanley Cup final.
