From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fague. Prime Minister Mark Carney has described talks between Canada and the U.S. as intensive. Now it turns out some of those talks have

Sources familiar with the talks tell CBC that Mark Carney and Donald Trump have had a few evening phone calls and exchanged text messages since meeting in the Oval Office a month ago. Ottawa wants a deal on tariffs before the G7, which is two weeks away. Ontario Premier Doug Ford says Canada shouldn't wait that long to retaliate with 50% tariffs of its own on U.S.

Steel industry CEOs and workers met with MPs and ministers Thursday, arguing for retaliatory tariffs of 50 percent now, regardless of the stage of talks. Carina Roman, CBC News, Ottawa. Meanwhile, Canada and China held talks today. The PMO's office confirms that Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with the Premier of China, Li Chung.

Carney also raised concerns about China's tariffs affecting agriculture and agri-food products, including canola and seafood. Russia has launched another large-scale attack in Ukraine. Local officials say Russia fired ballistic missiles and drone strikes early Friday morning
Starting point is 00:02:20 with multiple explosions heard in the capital of Kiev. Kiev's mayor says four people were killed in the strikes, with 20 others injured. Meanwhile, Russia contends it shot down 174 Ukrainian drones overnight. There's new research about a potential side effect of hugely popular GLP-1 drugs, including ozempic. Allison Northcott explains. A new Canadian study published in the Journal of American Medical Association Ophthalmology looked at a group of nearly 140,000 Ontarians 66 and over with type 2 diabetes. It found those who used GLP-1 type drugs to treat their conditions were twice as likely to develop
Starting point is 00:03:03 a type of vision problem than patients who did not use the drugs. While the study says the overall risk is still low, it adds to other studies suggesting other links to eye issues. Dr. Rajiv Muni is an associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto and the study's author. I would hope that patients and doctors who are prescribing these drugs would be aware of this and if their patient is complaining of any change in their vision including wavy lines, distortion, reduced vision that they would inform their doctor and then be seen by an eye care professional.
