From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Juliette Hazelwood. It's a challenging weekend for firefighters in Western Canada. Strong winds and warm temperatures will make battling the hundreds of blazes more difficult. And as Linda Ward tells us, a small First Nations community in British Columbia
Starting point is 00:00:49 is finding itself caught between fires. Well this is Kelly Lake First Nation about 80 kilometers south of Dawson Creek. It sits right in the middle of the fires path. Officials yesterday said flames hadn't reached the community but they were essentially hugging both sides of Kelly Lake. There is fire quite close so within a kilometer absolutely more likely a couple hundred meters of community. That was Carly de Raziers with the BC wildfire service. Four residents and two people fighting that fire remained in the community yesterday. We don't know if they're still there. Linda Ward, CBC News, Toronto.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Some advice about keeping cool as Canada approaches summer and BC gets some early season heat this weekend. Dr. Emily Newhouse is with Fraser Health. She says fans should not be used as a main source of cooling. In significant heat they don't actually meaningfully lower your body temperature. So people can overheat and they might be feeling that fan and it might feel nice, but meanwhile their body's still getting hotter and hotter. Fans can be great and they can actually be really useful in moving cool air in from outside.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Newhouse says it's more efficient to stay cool in an air conditioned space like malls and libraries. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Metro Vancouver region. Daytime highs are expected to be up to low 30s. Vladimir Zelensky wants Russia held accountable for today's shelling in Kharkiv, an attack he says left dozens injured and some dead. The Ukrainian president also called on the US and Europe for support in boosting his country's air defense systems and encouraged upcoming summits, including this month's G7
Starting point is 00:02:29 in Cananascus, Alberta, to help bring peace to Ukraine. This comes as an exchange of Russian and Ukrainian prisoners failed today. Moscow accused Kyiv of postponing the swap at the last minute, while Ukraine says the two sides did not agree to the reparation of soldiers' bodies. In Rome, Free, free Palestine! Free, free Palestine! protesters march in a rally calling for an end to the bombing in Gaza. The demonstration was organized by Italian opposition parties.
Starting point is 00:02:58 They're also calling for the Italian government to levy sanctions against Israel and officially recognize a Palestinian state. Alleged human trafficker Andrew Tate is in more legal trouble. Officials in Romania say he was caught driving 196 kilometers an hour in a 50-kilometer zone. His license has been suspended for 120 days. Tate and his brother are facing trial in Romania, the UK, and the US. The city of Calgary is now planning to white hat dignitaries at the upcoming G7 summit in Cananascis, Alberta, if possible.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Previously, tourism Calgary said given the complex security, there were no plans to hold a white hat ceremony for G7 visitors, having as a long established tradition intended to serve as a symbol of the city's hospitality. Mayor Jody Gondek says it's not clear whether there will be a formal ceremony or not. You know what, it's all going to depend on people's timing. So if there's the ability to do something more formal, if we can do it a little more publicly, certainly we will take advantage of that. But if it needs to be something that's quicker or more private, I'm going to respect that as well.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Gondek says so far they've confirmed a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney where they plan to give him a white hat. As for having other dignitaries, she says they're waiting for guidance. In Paris. Coco Goff has won the French Open for the first time. The 21-year-old American tennis star defeated top ranked Anya Sebelenko. The second ranked Goff claimed her second major trophy since the 2023 US Open. It was the first time the number one and two ranked players were matched in the French
