It's a challenging weekend for firefighters in Western Canada. Strong winds and warm temperatures make battling the hundreds of blazes more difficult. And as Linda Ward tells us, a small First Nations community in British Columbia is finding itself caught between fires. Well this is Kelly Lake First Nation about 80 kilometres south of Dawson Creek. It sits right in the middle of the fires path. Officials yesterday said flames hadn't reached the community,
Starting point is 00:01:04 but they were essentially hugging both sides of Kelly Lake. There is fire quite close so within a kilometer absolutely more likely a couple hundred meters of the community. That was Carly de Rozier with the BC wildfire service. Four residents and two people fighting that fire remained in the community yesterday. We don't know if they're still there. Linda Ward, CBC News, Toronto. Some advice about keeping cool as Canada approaches summer and BC gets some early season heat this weekend. Dr. Emily Newhouse is with Fraser Health. She says fan should not be used as a main source of cooling. In significant heat they don't actually meaningfully
Starting point is 00:01:45 lower your body temperature so people can overheat and they might be feeling that fan and it might feel nice but meanwhile their body's still getting hotter and hotter. Fans can be great and they can actually be really useful in moving cool air in from outside. Newhouse says it's more efficient to stay cool in an air-conditioned space like at malls and libraries. Clashes between police and protesters continue in Los Angeles over immigration raids across the city. Federal agents raided multiple workplaces and dozens of people have been arrested on immigration violations. Steve Futterman reports from LA. This latest action is taking place
Starting point is 00:02:24 at another Home Depot around 15 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Now you may recall a Home Depot was one of the targets on Friday. Often at these Home Depots there are day laborers looking for work and this seems to be perhaps the target of the ICE officers. We have heard flash bangs, there is tear gas or pepper spray or some irritant in the air, which I have tried to avoid breathing in. But this is clearly another action by ICE. There are protesters here who are very much upset that this is taking place. Steve Utterman reporting from Los Angeles. In New York City,
Starting point is 00:03:17 activists gather outside a Tesla store to protest CEO Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump over federal funding cuts affecting HIV prevention. Trump froze many aid programs early in his presidency, including a global HIV initiative. He has since reinstated some parts of it. Musk previously spearheaded Trump's Department of Government Efficiency and spent nearly $300 million U.S. on Trump's presidential campaign last year. In London. This house is painted this color because of the number of times that I stepped out of my front door to find somebody getting changed in my porch. Notting Hill residents are finding a creative way to deter crowds from their colorful neighborhood.
Starting point is 00:03:54 They're painting their houses black so tourists don't take photos outside their front doors. People tend to want to sit on the steps and eat their sandwiches there, so you can't get out of the house. Notting Hill is one of London's most popular districts with visitors flocking there to see normally pastel-colored houses. But after tourists have climbed their railings and tried to come inside their homes, locals are writing letters to their neighbours asking them to pick up a paintbrush too. The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward is coming to Canada later this month. He'll be in PEI, inspecting the troops of the Prince Edward Island Regiment on June 25th. Edward is Colonel-in-Chief. Queen Elizabeth's youngest son will also be in Toronto on the 28th. Then in Ottawa for Canada Day celebrations. And that's your World This Hour. Listen to us wherever you get your podcasts
Starting point is 00:04:48 updated every hour, seven days a week. For CBC News, I'm Julie-Ann Hazelwood.
