From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Clark Fague. We begin in Manitoba, just one of the
provinces fighting wildfires. Right now there are 28 burning, many of them out of
control and threatening homes and communities. Caroline Bargout has the latest.
This fire is a monster.
The winds have shifted in northern Manitoba and that has town officials in Snow Lake concerned.
A 300,000 hectare wildfire that started in Saskatchewan has been threatening a number
of communities in this province. And now it's moving closer to Snow Lake.
On Friday the town declared a local state of emergency
telling all 1100 residents they had to leave.
Jody Cockle is the town's emergency coordinator.
If you're looking at it from a map perspective, it's coming in basically on three sides.
Firefighters and municipal workers are staying behind to spray water on wooded areas
in hopes of keeping them from becoming fuel for the fire if it gets this far.
Caroline Bargou, CBC News, The Paw, Manitoba. A fire in northwestern Ontario has prompted an evacuation
order. Sandy Lake First Nation is near the border with Manitoba. Officials say the fire is spreading
close to the community and all residents are ordered to leave. Sandy Lake First Nation has a total population of just over
3,100 with over 2,600 residing on the reserve. Saskatchewan officials gave an update on the
province's fire situation. They say 24 wildfires are burning, seven of them not contained, but rain is helping fire crews.
Brian Chartrand runs land operations with the Saskatchewan Safety Agency.
Things are kind of staying where they're at and now with this reprieve I hope that we do get rain
on these things so that we start establishing line and go more on the offensive than the defensive
that we have been protecting structures. But I'm just glad that we're not getting more starts and we can concentrate on the ones that
we're currently dealing with. The province has doubled the stipend it gives
evacuees from 20 to 40 dollars a day. Officials say it's been several years
since that rate was reviewed. An epicenter of immigration in the US is
being rocked by protests. It comes as federal agents carry out immigration
raids across Los Angeles.
U.S. President Donald Trump has called in 2,000 National Guard troops for what he calls
the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester. Chris Reyes has the latest.
In Los Angeles, where immigration raids have rattled communities,
another rally in support of those detained.
These advocates are chanting asked to speak with an attorney Garcia is
expected to get that chance finally Ben a story is his immigration attorney.
We're just going to be able to speak with him for the first time this
weekend. So we've not had an opportunity yet to discuss the facts, to discuss his history with him
and whether there's any veracity to these allegations.
Deportation still looms over Garcia's head.
The government says he will be sent back to El Salvador whether he's found guilty or not.
Chris Reyes, CBC News, New York.
For the first time in nearly six decades, two Canadian
quarterbacks went head-to-head in the opening game of a CFL season.
As seen on TSN, Edmonton's Trey Ford, a Niagara Falls, Ontario native, and BC's
Nathan Rourke of Victoria
started for their respective teams with Rourke throwing three touchdowns at over 300 yards,
leading the Lions to a 31-14 victory over the Elks in Vancouver.
The last time two Canadian QBs went head-to-head at the start of a CFL season was in the 1960s.
And four Canadian golfers are within four shots of the lead heading into the final round of the RBC Canadian Open
being played north of Toronto.
The top Canadian is Mac Hughes of Hamilton who sits at 12 under par,
two shots behind co-leaders Matteo Manacero of Italy and New Zealander Ryan Fox.
BC's Nick Taylor who ended a decades-long Canadian drought at the Open winning two years ago
is at 10 under par, four shots off the lead.
And that is your World This Hour.
For CBC News, I'm Claude Fague.
