From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Gina Louise Phillips. Hundreds of wildfires continue
to burn across parts of B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan and causing the most damage in
Manitoba, where flames have destroyed about 800,000 hectares of land. Caroline Bargout has the latest on the efforts
to get those wildfires under control.
It's really dry.
Gary Lejean has never seen the forest this dry. He says normally there's a lot more
moisture in the ground in the spring. Lejean is a heavy equipment operator on the front
lines of the Manitoba wildfire fight. What happens is you go on the outside of the fire and
you try and take the fuel away from the fire. His job is to use a dozer or
front-end loader to knock down trees and try to create a fire break to stop
flames from spreading. He says most of the time it does the trick. The only time
the fire goes over that is if there's big heavy winds.
Manitoba remains under a province-wide state of emergency.
There are 28 wildfires burning here.
Those fires have forced more than 18,000 people from their homes.
Peter Thibodeau is one of them.
Give us some answers.
The province says adults registered with the Red Cross will receive $238 a week,
but Thibodeau has gotten nothing.
A spokesperson for the Red Cross says some evacuees may need to verify their identity
in person.
Caroline Bargout, CBC News in the Paw, Manitoba.
A fire in northwestern Ontario has prompted an evacuation order.
Sandy Lake First Nation is near the border with Manitoba.
Officials say the fire is spreading close to the community and all residents are
ordered to leave. Sandy Lake First Nation has a total population of just over 3,100,
with over 2,600 residing on the reserve. U.S. President Donald Trump is deploying 2,000
National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area. This following clashes between Immigration and
Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE, agents and protesters.
Steve Futterman has more.
A second straight day of confrontations between protesters and federal agents attempting to carry out Donald Trump's deportation orders.
There were flashbangs, tear gas and pepper spray.
This protester putting the total blame on the president. What we're facing right now is Trump's armed Gestapo.
We're just seeing a glimpse of the future that Trump wants to implement.
The protests are taking place in a number of areas, in downtown Los Angeles and yesterday
near a Home Depot, a location agents have often focused on because of the number of
day laborers who often gather
outside the store looking for work.
Last night Trump's so-called border czar Tom Homan raised the stakes, announcing the National
Guard is being brought in.
This is about enforcing law and again we're not going to apologize for doing it.
We're stepping up.
Initially 2,000 Guard members will be sent here, but California Governor Gavin Newsom
opposes the move. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Los Angeles.
In Columbia now.
People rush a man into a waiting ambulance after he was shot.
Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe-Turbe suffered critical injuries after being shot twice from behind in Bogota Saturday
as he hosted a campaign event at a city park.
One of the shooters, reported to be 15 years old, was arrested on scene.
The 39-year-old Uribe Turbe is a member of the opposition conservative Democratic Center
Party and considered a possible candidate to the country's presidential election next
year.
In a release statement, the Colombian presidency condemned the shooting.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says his country condemns the, quote,
attempted assassination.
Four Canadian golfers are within four shots of the lead, heading into the final round
of the RBC Canadian Open being played north of Toronto.
The top Canadian is Mack Hughes of Hamilton who sits at 12 under par,
two shots behind co-leaders Matteo Manassaro of Italy and New Zealander Ryan Fox. BC's Nick
Taylor who ended a decades-long Canadian drought at the Open winning two years ago is at 10 under,
four shots off the lead. The tournament is being played at TPC Toronto at Osprey at Valley in Caledon,
Ontario.
And that is The World This Hour. Thanks for listening. I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
