Starting point is 00:00:36 For The World This Hour, I'm Gina Louise Phillips. This was an act of targeted political violence. We don't settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint. That's Minnesota Governor Tim Walz talking about the assassination of a Democratic state representative and her husband and the attempted assassination of a second Democratic representative and his wife.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Shelter-in-place orders are in effect in two Minneapolis suburbs while police search for the suspect. Brooklyn Police Chief Mark Bruhle says the shooter was masquerading as a police officer. They did drive a vehicle that looked exactly like an SUV squad car equipped with emergency lights that looked exactly like a police vehicle and yes they were wearing a vest with taser other equipment a badge very similar to mine no question if they were in this room you would assume that they are a police officer. The suspect was leaving the home of the second attack when he was approached by police.
Starting point is 00:01:28 He opened fire on them then escaped through the back of the house. Hundreds of law enforcement officers are combing the area for the gunman. Brule says a manifesto and a list of targets were found in the vehicle and the victims were on that list. While the crash investigation continues, India has ordered inspections of all Air India's Boeing 787 aircraft in the wake of Thursday's deadly crash. 270 people were killed, most on the plane and some on the ground. The plane crashed moments after takeoff. Salima Shivji has more. I can't like handle it. The wait is agonizing for Imtiaz Ali Syed. He knows his brother, sister-in-law and their two young children were on board the Boeing
Starting point is 00:02:09 plane that crashed moments after taking off from Ahmedabad's airport. But the intensity of the explosion means DNA is needed to identify most of the victims. It's aggravating the trauma for those trying to grieve their lost loved ones. And the death toll from the worst airplane crash India has seen in decades keeps climbing. Now at more than 270. More than 30 people died on the ground in the devastation the plane left as it crushed buildings on the way down. The crash site is cordoned off and full of activity Saturday, with specialized investigators
Starting point is 00:02:41 from the UK and the US, as well as Boeing joining the teams already on the ground. One of the plane's black boxes is being analyzed. It's recorded flight data crucial to figuring out what went wrong. Salima Shivji, CBC News, Ahemdabad, India. Russia and Ukraine exchanged more prisoners of war today. This comes one day after Moscow handed the bodies of 1,200 dead Ukrainian soldiers to Kiev.
Starting point is 00:03:05 This latest exchange comes as the two sides continue a bloody battle for the Sumy region of Ukraine. Dominik Vleitist has more. Russian POWs celebrating their release earlier. The first opportunity for some to phone home. Sending greetings to children and grandchildren, he says. Tell them I am home. A number of Ukrainian soldiers were also released, some of whom have been held since 2022. This is the fourth prisoner exchange Russia and Ukraine have carried out this week following recent negotiations in Turkey. The latest swap came just a day after Russia handed over the bodies of some 1200 dead Ukrainian soldiers.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Moscow, though, says it has not yet received any of its war dead. Meanwhile, Ukraine claims its forces have stopped Russian troops advancing in its northeastern Sumi region and are now battling to regain control along the border with Russia. WestJet says it continues to respond to a cyber security incident affecting its internal systems and the WestJet app. Law enforcement and Transport Canada are also investigating. They provided few details but advised customers and employees to be extra cautious, especially with sharing
Starting point is 00:04:30 personal information. WestJet says services are still running safely and are unaffected. Formula One's Canadian Grand Prix runs this weekend in Montreal. Lance Stroll is the lone Canadian driver. He's racing for Aston Martin and is gaining a reputation for fighting through pain.
