Starting point is 00:00:32 From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Claude Fague. We begin in the Middle East. Explosions and gunfire in central Tehran, where an Israeli missile struck. Israel and Iran continue to attack each other. Air raid sirens are sounding in Jerusalem and reports of fresh explosions in Tel Aviv. The conflict is now into its third day. U.S. President Donald Trump is posting on social media that he says there will be a peace plan in place between Israel and Iran soon, and that many calls and meetings are taking place.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Iranian media are reporting close to 130 deaths. In Israel, there have been at least 10 deaths and dozens of injuries and overnight attacks, at least seven of them in Bat Yam near Tel Aviv. The CBC's Crystal Gomancing is on the site. 61 buildings have been hit. We're being told that 10 of the buildings in this area have been destroyed. Every once in a while the workers who are digging through the rubble will pause and start shouting looking for anyone who might be
Starting point is 00:01:43 trapped under the rubble. We have been told that the number of missing has dropped throughout the day. Earlier it started at about 30. That number at last report was sitting around three people. This neighborhood was just one of many along the coast that was hit overnight. Israeli officials with the military took the unprecedented step today of issuing an evacuation warning for people in Iran who happen to live by weapons manufacturing locations or any military sites. Iranian police are also reporting that they have arrested two Mossad intelligence officers
Starting point is 00:02:18 that has not been confirmed. Crystal Gamancing, CBC News, Betyam Israel. That conflict as well as the war in Ukraine promising to be top agendas in the in Alberta this week as G7 leaders prepare to meet in Cananaskis. The CBC's chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton has more. This is Mark Carney's first G7 as prime minister. He's attended in other roles in the past and they don't even believe they can get a joint statement, a consensus on anything. And certainly the conflict in the Middle East won't be one of those issues. It's not even officially on the agenda, but it is going to come up given the ongoing strikes between Israel and Iran.
Starting point is 00:02:56 And it's definitely an area where G7 leaders are not quite on the same page. Leaders obviously continue to say Israel has the right to defend itself, but there are nations like Canada, for instance, calling for restraint. It's worth remembering here too that Canada, the UK and France recently called on Israel to stop its military expansion into Gaza and allow in more aid. So that complicates matters as well. There were set to be talks between Iran and the United States today to talk about nuclear development. Those have been called off. So this is a crisis that could certainly derail progress at the G7 on some of the areas up for discussion.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Rosemary Barton, CBC News, Ottawa. Seven people are dead after a helicopter crash in northern India. It happened early today in the state of Uttarakhand as the chopper was heading to a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site in the Himalayas. Officials say the crash happened within minutes of takeoff on what was supposed to be a 10-minute flight. The crash is believed to have been caused by poor weather conditions.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Officials say a wildfire near Squamish, BC is now classified as being held after help from cool, cloudy weather. The BC Wildfire Service says the blaze is expected to remain within its current perimeter based on fuel, weather and resource availability. The District of Squamish says the Dryden Creek Fire wildfire has been held steady since Friday. To Edmonton now in the Stanley Cup Final. final. As seen on hockey night in Canada, Marsha and the Halifax natives scored his second goal of the game to put the game out of reach for the Florida Panthers who beat the Oilers 5-2 grabbing a 3-2 series lead.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Game 6 will be back in Sunrise, Florida on Tuesday. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Figg.
