The ocean is vast, beautiful, and lawless.
I'm Ian Urbina back with an all new season of The Outlaw Ocean.
The stories we bring you this season are literally life or death.
We look into the shocking prevalence of forced labor, mine boggling overfishing, migrants
hunted and captured.
The Outlaw Ocean takes you where others won't.
Available on CBC Listen or wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
We begin in Alberta.
You spend so much time talking about Russia and he's no longer at the table.
Donald Trump says Russia should not have been kicked out of the organization once known as the G8.
The US president spoke to reporters alongside Prime Minister Mark Carney in Cananaskis.
Carney is hosting the leaders from the group of seven nations.
Their annual talks get underway today as wars in Ukraine and the Middle East add to global
uncertainty.
Trump says his focus to his conversations with Carney is trade.
We're going to see if we can get to the bottom of it today. I'm a tariff person. I've always
been a tariff. It's simple, it's easy, it's precise, and it just goes very quickly. And
I think Mark has a more complex idea, but also very good.
Trump also says he wouldn't mind China joining the G7 club also.
Israelis bury eight people killed by Iranian missiles overnight. The two
nations have exchanged rounds of rocket fire since Israel attacked Iranian
nuclear sites last Friday.
Officials in Tehran say more than 200 Iranians have been killed since fighting began, most
of them civilians.
Israel now controls the skies over Tehran, says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He calls it a change to their entire military campaign, which has stated an aim of wiping out Iran's nuclear and missile programs. Fresh
Israeli airstrikes targeted state TV headquarters in Tehran today and the
Israeli military is warning hundreds of thousands of Tehran residents to move
out of harm's way. Minnesota police are bringing a number of charges including
first-degree murder against the suspect who allegedly shot two lawmakers.
57-year-old Vance Bolter was arrested following a frantic manhunt over the weekend.
He is accused of fatally shooting a Democrat lawmaker and her husband and wounding a state
senator and his wife.
Investigators say in all, the suspect cased out the homes of four elected officials.
Joe Thompson is acting U.S. attorney for Minnesota.
It is no exaggeration to say that his crimes are the stuff of nightmares.
Belter stalked his victims like prey. He went to their homes, held them out as a police officer,
and shot them in cold blood.
Officials call the killings a political assassination.
Police in Ontario's Peel region west of Toronto have dismantled a criminal ring linked to the towing business.
18 suspects are facing almost a hundred charges related to extortion, fraud and firearms.
Police say the Brampton-based gang extorted money from South Asian operated businesses.
The criminals also engaged in insurance fraud by staging collisions.
Almost half of the suspects were out on bail at the time of their arrest.
Police seized 18 tow trucks, four luxury cars, guns and other weapons, and recovered several stolen vehicles.
It will be easier to see more of Canada this summer.
Starting Friday, all national parks will have free to see more of Canada this summer. Starting Friday, all
national parks will have free admission for the rest of the season. And the perks don't
end there. Ottawa calls it the Canada Strong Pass. David Thurton reports.
And it couldn't be easier to take part.
Heritage Minister Stephen Guilbault making good on a Liberal platform promise.
There's no need to register or get physical pass.
All summer there will be no admission fees at historic sites, parks and marine conservation areas
and a 25% discount on Parks Canada overnight camping charges.
Explore Canada's national treasures. Discover new places. Live your own Canadian adventure.
Gilboa also announced national museums and Via Rail will be free for children and anyone age 17
and under. And 18 to 24 year olds can get a discount on museum admission and passenger
rail tickets. The Canada Strong Pass comes as travellers opt for staycations instead
of travelling to the U.S. It launches Friday and lasts until September 2nd.
