Starting point is 00:00:00 Ten years ago, I asked my partner Kelsey if she would marry me. I did that, despite the fact that every living member of my family who had ever been married had also gotten divorced. Forever is a Long Time is a five-part series in which I talk to those relatives about why they got divorced and why they got married. You can listen to it now on CBC's Personally. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. The final day of the G7 summit in Alberta will go ahead without Donald Trump at the table.
Starting point is 00:00:47 The US president has left early and is now back in Washington. Well, I have to be back. Very important. You probably see what I see. I have to be back. Since Trump yesterday appearing to suggest that he was leaving the summit to deal with the conflict between Israel and Iran. But before he left, Canadian officials say Trump signed a G7 statement that calls for broad de-escalation of hostilities across the
Starting point is 00:01:13 Middle East. But what Trump does now is anyone's guess. Here's Janice McGregor. A senior Canadian government official told reporters on background that it was Mark Carney that got Donald Trump to sign on to this call for de-escalation in the Middle East, a broad statement that not only references the ongoing bombing, but also the earlier conflict in Gaza. Earlier reports and remarks from Trump himself had made it seem like he wouldn't be part of any joint declaration on this, standing firm instead with America's ongoing support for Israel, not wanting to discuss potential U.S. military involvement.
Starting point is 00:01:47 But after saying in front of the cameras that he thought Iran was basically at the table and wanted to make a deal, Trump posted on social media at dawn this morning that this is fake news that he'd reached out to Iran to initiate peace talks. He left the summit citing the urgent need to engage on this conflict. But exactly what he's doing? Very unclear. Janice McGregor, CBC News, Banff, Alberta. So the summit continues today without the U.S. president. And on the agenda for Prime Minister Mark Carney, along with the scheduled discussions,
Starting point is 00:02:18 will be meetings on the sidelines with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. That meeting comes after at least 15 people were killed overnight in Ukraine, following another round of Russian missile and drone strikes. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky says the damage in Kiev is the worst the capital has seen since the war began. Prior Stewart has the latest. Russia launched 440 drones and attacks across the country and 32 missiles. One of them slammed into a nine-story apartment building where rescuers are still picking
Starting point is 00:02:53 through the pile of ash-gray rubble. 57-year-old Victoria Vovchenko lives across the street. They were elderly and children who were wounded, she said. Innocent civilians. What do they want from us? Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet with G7 leaders in Kenanaskis, Alberta in an effort to shore up support for the country. But U.S. President Donald Trump won't be part of that discussion.
Starting point is 00:03:21 He left the summit early, and while he was there, remarked that he thought it was a mistake to remove Russia from what once was the G8. Briar Stewart, CBC News, London. Meanwhile, North Korea is saying it's sending 5,000 military construction workers to support reconstruction work in Russia's Kursk region. Russian media is reporting today that it's another sign of expanding partnership between the two countries. North Korea has already sent thousands of troops and conventional weapons to support Russia's war against Ukraine. Back to the Middle East, at least 50 people were killed overnight in southern Gaza. Once a scene at Nasser Hospital in Han Yuna submitted reports that Israeli tanks had opened fire on a crowd waiting for emergency aid.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Along with the dead, as many as 200 people are injured. Some are in critical condition. At this point, the Israeli military has yet to comment. The Florida Panthers can win the Stanley Cup tonight. They're at home for game six of the final with a three games to two lead over the Edmonton Oilers. And while Edmonton may be on thin ice back at home, they have an entire country pulling for them. Just rooting for whoever can win the cup for us. It would be amazing to see everybody bond and come together as a country.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Hockey is really Canada's game and it's important that we are able to use this chance to get behind them and be united as a country. If the Oilers win tonight, they'll force a game seven that would be played in Edmonton on Friday. And that is The World This Hour. I'm Joe Cummings.
