Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi everybody, I'm Jamie Poisson and I host Frontburner. It's Canada's most listened to daily news podcast. Just the other day we were in a story meeting talking about how we can barely keep up with what's going on in Canada and the world right now. And like it's our job to do that. So if you are looking for a one-stop shop for the most important and interesting news stories of the day, we've got you. Stop doom scrolling. Follow Frontburner instead. got you. Stop doom scrolling. Follow Frontburner instead. From CBC News, it's the World This Hour. I'm Joe Cummings. As Israel and Iran continue to exchange missile and drone fire, the world is waiting to see if the United States will get involved. You don't know. I may do it.
Starting point is 00:00:46 I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I'm going to do. I can tell you this, that Iran's got a lot of trouble. In Washington today, that is U.S. President Donald Trump. He says it's now up to Iran to determine how long the Israeli bombardment will continue. Two very simple words, a very simple, unconditional surrender. That means I've had it. However, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, appeared on state television
Starting point is 00:01:11 today saying Iran will never surrender. And he rejects the idea of an imposed peace warning that Iran does not respond to threats. Meanwhile, Russia is closely monitoring the conflict, having recently signed a cooperation agreement with the Iranian government. Briar Stewart has more. It was just in January when Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a strategic cooperation pact with the President of Iran. The agreement outlined areas where the two countries would bolster ties, including defense.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Tehran has already supplied Moscow with thousands of Shahed drones for its war in Ukraine. And it helped Russia set up a factory to mass produce them. But Moscow has been reluctant to supply Iran with the weaponry it wants. The kinds of capabilities that the Iranians really want from Russia, Russia has not given Iran. Hannah Naute is with the James Martin Center for Non-Proliferation Studies. She says there's no evidence that Russia has given Iran the fighter jets it's been asking for or additional air defense systems.
Starting point is 00:02:16 She says Russia wants to keep all of its own weapons for its war on Ukraine and it also doesn't want to damage its relationships with other Middle Eastern countries like the United Arab Emirates. Briar Stewart, CBC News, London. Spurred on by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appearance this week at the G7 summit, Canada and India have agreed to reinstate high commissioners. As well, work is underway toward restoring all visa services. That's Prime Minister Modi saying he is looking forward to moving the Canada-India relationship in a positive direction.
Starting point is 00:02:55 The diplomatic relationship between the two countries has been cool for the past two years following former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegation that the Indian government was involved in a fatal shooting of a Canadian Sikh leader. More than six weeks after they were last seen, there is still no trace of two young children missing in Nova Scotia. And at this point, police officials can only say that there is no evidence to suggest that the children were abducted.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Kayla Hounsell has the latest. I know somebody out there knows where they're at. Belinda Gray is pleading for information about the whereabouts of her grandchildren, Lily and Jack Sullivan, six and four years old, missing from their rural Nova Scotia home since Friday, May 2nd. It's quite rare in my career I've never seen two missing children go at the same time. The RCMP's Corporal Guillaume Tromble maintains there is no evidence to suggest the children were abducted. More than 50 people have been interviewed.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Gray says her son, the children's biological father, has been questioned three times. A couple of days ago they had contact and they told them that they weren't looking his way anymore, that everything's fine. She says she doesn't have much hope the children will be found alive and even worries the mystery of what happened to them may never be solved. Kayla Hounsell, CBC News, lands down station Nova Scotia. Now to Florida. The Florida Panthers back-to-back Stanley Cup champions. That's the end of this year's hockey season with the Florida Panthers again winning the Stanley Cup. They defeated the Edmonton Oilers
Starting point is 00:04:32 last night 5-1 to take the best of seven in six games. They make matters worse for Oilers fans. It's the second year running. The Panthers have beaten Edmonton in the final. The Panthers have beaten Edmonton in the final. And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
