Taylor Jenkins Reid is a literary superstar. You might know her from her previous books,
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo or Daisy Jones and the Six. On my podcast Bookends,
Taylor told me all about her new space thriller and also got into how she deals with being
a celebrity author.
That's what I've been working on lately is understanding that there's a person named
Taylor Jenkins Reid and they talk about her and sometimes she has things in common with me and other times someone's perception of me is different than the real me.
If you want to hear more of that conversation, check out Bookends with Matea Roach wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, it's the world this hour.
I'm Joe Cummings.
First to the White House.
You don't know.
I may do it.
I may not do it.
I mean, nobody knows what I'm going to do.
I can tell you this, that Iran's got a lot of trouble.
And as U.S. President Donald Trump being asked by reporters today if the United States plans
to join the ongoing Israeli military campaign against Iran.
And as he weighs his options, Trump continues to call for Iran's surrender.
Margaret Evans has more.
He likes a winner.
And right now we're winning.
And as long as we're winning, I think he'll be very much very supportive.
Michael Oren is a former Israeli ambassador to Washington.
Israeli cabinet ministers have also been issuing not so subtle hints about
regime change as a potential goal.
The prime minister several times, not just during this conflict, but earlier in earlier
years has come out and called on the Iranian people to rise up. This is the opportunity
to overthrow an oppressive government.
There is no love lost between many Iranians and the Ayatollahs who govern the Islamic
Republic with extreme repression.
But regional experts, including Renat Mansour,
warn against making assumptions.
Do you say, yes please, bomb us if this means democracy
and a better life?
Haven't we learned that democracy and better development
doesn't come through weapons and military solutions?
There is little obvious sign, however, of a diplomatic solution anywhere in sight.
Margaret Evans, CBC News, Jerusalem.
All this as for a sixth night in a row, Israeli warplanes have bombarded Tehran.
Israeli officials are saying Iranian nuclear infrastructure and missile sites were among
the targets.
Iran, meanwhile, has advised the United Nations that it intends to respond without restraint
and says it has no intention of agreeing to a surrender.
The Prime Minister's office is confirming that Mark Carney will be in Europe next week.
The trip will focus on defense and trade, with Carney attending a NATO summit and a summit
on Canada-EU relations.
Carney leaves on Sunday.
This follows the prime minister hosting this week's G7 leaders
summit in Alberta.
It's an often hidden scenario being played out more and more
now as the country's population ages.
It's young Canadians being left with the responsibility
of caring for their aging relatives.
And calls are being made for the health care system
to better support these caregivers.
Jennifer Yoon reports.
It would survive if I didn't do it, no one else would.
Jessie Sidhu says she was four years old when she started looking after her dad and her
siblings.
Her dad was struggling with addiction, her mom working to support the family.
Just kind of the basics of making sure that he was fed, that he had food, getting him water.
She didn't know it yet, but Jessie was acting as a caregiver. And there are more young caregivers in Canada than you might think.
1.5 million between the ages of 15 and 30 who look after loved ones with serious health problems.
A recent study published in the journal Canadian Family Physicians suggests doctors can step in.
Lucas Perry is a co-author and a former young caregiver himself.
I acknowledge that you guys are our caregiving and it's an important role and check in on the people who are caregivers and to sort of ask them questions as well.
He's hoping if doctors are able to identify young caregivers, they'll also be able to connect them with the help they need.
Jennifer Yoon, CBC News, Toronto.
Again this year, the Florida Panthers are the Stanley Cup Champions,
and there is no joy in Edmonton.
Very depressing. We'll get them next year I guess.
It hurts really bad. Second year in a row, but I mean it's okay. I mean we'll come back.
Pretty disappointed. I mean going to the game I was preparing for heartbreak, but I also believed they could
do it as well.
But, end of the day, Panthers were the better team.
That's a response from the streets of Edmonton last night after Florida defeated the Oilers
to win their second straight Stanley Cup.
The Panthers beating Edmonton 5-1 in game six to clinch the best of seven, four games
to two.
As heard there, this is the second year in a row Florida has beaten
the Oilers in the Cup final. And it means Canada's Stanley Cup drought continues for yet another year.
Montreal now the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup and that was back in 1993.
And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
