Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi, I'm Gavin Crawford, the host of Because News, Canada's funniest news quiz. Every week we make jokes out of the headlines with help from a panel of brilliant comedians like Alice Moran. Hi there, I'm a sweet little Alberta dirtbag with very gentle takes. They call me light, sweet, and crude. Half your job is making jokes, but the other half is scoring points. What subjects do you net the most points in? Sports, but also space, because I went to space camp so much as a kid, not to brag.
Starting point is 00:00:25 That's the exact amount of knowledge you need for this show. Stay vaguely informed while in good company. With me. Listen to Because News, available wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Gina Louise Phillips. The White House says the FBI is looking for whoever leaked a preliminary intelligence report to the media.
Starting point is 00:00:48 It alleged U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites were ineffective. But as Sam Sampson reports, the White House insists the bombings achieved their goal. This operation was a complete and total success. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, along with the rest of the Trump administration, is not backing down, saying the U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites were a wild success. I think the only other time the United Nations, Israel, Iran, and the United States has agreed on something is that it's that the sky is blue, but they all agree that Iran's nuclear facilities were completely demolished. Levitt followed the lead of the U.S. Secretary
Starting point is 00:01:23 of Defense, who berated American media outlets for reporting on a preliminary intelligence document. It suggested the strike's damage was limited. Levitt says the reporting undermined the president. And more importantly, the brave fighter pilots who conducted one of the most successful operations in United States history. Levitt said there were no plans on the books to meet with Iran, just that they're on a diplomatic path. U.S. lawmakers will get even more details about the strikes
Starting point is 00:01:49 and where this government is heading next with Iran in classified meetings today and Friday. Sam Sampson, CBC News, Washington. A community in the eastern Ontario town of Almont is grieving after a school bus fatally struck a nine-year-old boy yesterday afternoon. He was riding his bike home from school when he was hit by a bus full of children. Corey Noonan is with the OPP. There was a lot of witnesses. It sounds like there was a tremendous amount of support from
Starting point is 00:02:19 the neighbouring school. Staff rushed out to the scene to assist. The school did their best to keep as many students inside away from the scene as possible. The school is providing mental health support to staff and students. The wife of a lung transplant recipient says she has to sell her family home to cover the costs of staying in Ontario for the operation. She's one of several Nova Scotia patients saying the Nova Scotia government needs to do more. Carolyn Ray has more. It's really a slap in the face.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Verbena Brenten Goguen is trying to come to grips with a new future. Her husband Donald died in May, months after having a lung transplant in Toronto. While they were there, they received an allowance from the province to help pay for accommodations. But she says it didn't come close to paying the additional bills. They sold their car and ATV, they took out a loan. Now she needs to sell her house in Spring Hill to make ends meet. I did not feel my province cared at all. Six months after her surgery, Nan Clark is back home and feeling stronger.
Starting point is 00:03:23 She sent the premier the bill for her accommodations, which cost $35,000 on top of the allowance. But the province won't cover it. I can't believe that they do this to transplant patients. The health minister says the program is designed to help with expenses but not cover all. Carolyn Ray, CBC News, head of St. Margaret's Bay. The University of Toronto is going to help some international students at Harvard finish their degrees in Canada. The Trump administration is threatening to withhold visas from international
Starting point is 00:03:56 students, so U of T has agreed to let Harvard students take in-person classes in Toronto and online classes taught by both U of T and Harvard faculty. The latest Toronto Raptors draft pick has gone viral. With the ninth pick in the 2025 NBA draft, the Toronto Raptors select Colin Murray Boyles. And that is when cameras caught Murray Boyles mouthing the F-word. Online, many saw that as a sign that he was, well, disappointed to be going to Toronto. But Murray Boyles insists that's not what happened. Just disbelief.
Starting point is 00:04:31 What I said was not a bad thing by any means. Just very thankful for it. That was like a surreal moment to hear my name called and by this organization that has a good history and have really good players as of right now. It was just a crazy moment. The Raptors have another draft pick today. And that is The World This Hour. For news anytime, go to our website cbcnews.ca. For CBC News, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
