From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fague. An extra nine billion dollars in less
than a year. That's what Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to spend on Canada's defence in order to meet NATO's original goal of spending 2% of GDP on defence.
Allied pressure and Donald Trump in the White House being the impetus for Canada finally complying.
But as Carina Roman reports, industry watchers say getting that much money out the door that quickly
will be a near impossible feat.
I like what I hear, but he's got to crack the whip here.
Former Defence Industry Executive John Ball says the Prime Minister has the
right idea, but he's up against risk-averse government departments.
They have to look within themselves and say we are the procurement people. That's
our job and we need to be measured on results.
Kristen Cianfarani, president and CEO of the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries
says it's time to do away with drawn-out procurement competitions.
Why are we running competitions when we already know which supplier we want?
The government points to existing mechanisms that could make procurement faster,
such as standing offers or invoking
a national security exception.
Conservative MP and defence critic James Bazan says the government has presented no concrete
plan on how to hit its ambitious targets.
We're going to be in there half a year to spend money that the department won't be able
to shovel out the door.
Karina Roman, CBC News, Ottawa.
Israel's hard-right security minister is calling for the country to take over Gaza
and encourage Palestinians to leave.
Itamar Ben-Gvir made his declaration in front of what Jews call the Temple Mount
and what's known to Muslims as the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
It's the first time a government minister
has openly prayed at the site.
Palestinian leaders, as well as Jordan and Saudi Arabia,
are condemning Ben-Ghver's move as a provocation.
Jews are normally allowed to tour the site,
but not pray there.
The war in Gaza continues to kill civilians,
including 175 who have died from starvation.
Canada, U.S.
Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc is expecting Mark Carney and Donald Trump to speak in the
next few days.
This morning, LeBlanc told the CBS News Magazine show Face the Nation that he thinks there
could be a deal to strike down newly imposed tariffs.
We think the economies of both countries are strengthened when we do things together.
The trading relationship between Canada and the United States is unlike other partners.
One description which I thought was very apt, we don't sell things to each other as much
as we build things together.
And that's why it's difficult in this relationship when so much is integrated, but we remain
very optimistic. The 35% levy took effect Friday.
It's only on Canadian goods entering the states that aren't covered under the current Canada-U.S.-Mexico
trade agreement, although the majority of exports heading into the U.S. are not taxed.
Canadian swimmer Summer Macintosh wrapped up her individual competition at the World
Aquatics Championships in the way that she started, striking gold.
This is a cemetery member in Singapore, McIntosh in a championship record.
The 18-year-old from Toronto cruised to victory in the Women's 400-metre medley race early
this morning, setting a new championship record to claim her fourth gold medal of the event. We think overall happy with this world championships I have to be
four gold to something that I've never achieved at the world stage before. I
broke my kind of curse of three everything comes in threes and now
everything comes in fours and hopefully I can push for everything to come in
fives even though I fell short of my goal in the Trinidad Fly and overall with the gold medal count,
I mean, it's not a failure whatsoever.
Four golds is four golds.
And I have so many amazing takeaways
and so many lessons that I can learn from this knee
and that's what's gonna keep pushing and moving me forward.
McIntosh also won bronze yesterday
in the women's 800 meter freestyle
to finish the championship with a total of five medals
tying Americans Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps for most medals won at a
singles championship. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude
Fague.
