From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Gina Louise Phillips. A fire in B.C.'s central
Vancouver Island has forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes. The Wesley Ridge Wildfire burning northwest
of Nanaimo has grown to over 500 hectares. Fire officials have declared it a wildfire
of note, meaning it's highly visible or poses a significant threat to public safety
or infrastructure. Officials are not aware of any structure losses at this time.
And in Newfoundland, an evacuation order has been issued for a community of about 300 people.
A wildfire broke out Sunday near the municipality of Small Point, Adams Cove and Broad Cove.
The area has seen a dozen fires in the last few months.
Curtis Delaney is the mayor of Adams Cove.
He says arson is not being ruled out as a cause for the surge in fires.
They're all very similar and very similar circumstances to when they've similar weather
conditions, those types of things.
I mean, if you stack them up side by side, like I said, they're all almost cookie cutter.
So that's what makes them definitely suspicious.
And the area, I mean, it's confined within our town for the most part.
Another fire in May forced residents to evacuate and destroyed 12 homes and 45 other structures.
Canada's Finance and Foreign Affairs ministers are off to Mexico to talk Trump, trade and tariffs.
Francois Philippe-Champagne and Anita Anand will talk to officials there
after both countries failed to secure a trade deal with
the US. Peter Armstrong reports.
In a lot of ways, Canada and Mexico have been a study in contrast through the trade war.
Both countries were facing a barrage of new tariffs. Canada pushed back with retaliatory
measures. Mexico did not. Both countries were able to carve out exemptions for products
that are compliant under the US-Mexico-Canada Free Trade Agreement.
But as the latest deadline approached, Mexico secured a 90-day tariff delay and Canada did
not.
Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says tactics for dealing with Trump are not
the only item on the agenda.
So it is important for us to engage with our Mexican friends.
And so the meetings will be
constructive in that respect, looking at markets, looking at diversification, looking at strengthening
our partnership with our Mexican colleagues.
Canada conducts about $56 billion in two-way trade with Mexico every year, a fraction of
the trade done with the United States and long heralded as an opportunity for Canada.
Peter Armstrong, CBC News, Washington.
Canadian border officials intercepted a cube truck carrying 44 migrants shortly after it
crossed into Canada from the U.S. The Canada Border Services Agency says it happened over
the weekend near the Stansted border crossing in Quebec.
CBSA says three alleged smugglers have been charged
with attempting to help people enter the country illegally. Happening on the court this hour in
Montreal, Canada's last remaining player in this year's National Bank Open is looking to crush her
opponent in the quarterfinal. The rising 18-year-old tennis star, Victoria Mbuko, stunned crowds by knocking
off the tournament's top seed, and now she's hoping to get another step closer to the tournament's
final. Sarah Levitt takes us there.
She may have come into the tournament as a wild card, but she's made it all the way to
the quarterfinals. And Canada's Victoria Mukko did it by beating the number one seed Coco Golf.
The start of the year ranked outside the world's top 300 it's a 50th win this year.
The 18 year old from Toronto is now ranked 85th in the world and she's the
last Canadian standing in the singles draw. The tournament started with news of a retirement from Eugénie Bouchard.
Now the attention has shifted to the future.
To be honest, I'm not surprised.
Pierre Lamarche used to coach Mboko.
She's a kid that from when she was four and started playing, she just hates losing.
Winning tonight would take her to the semis with a nation of tennis fans rallying behind her.
Sarah Levitt, CBC News, Montreal.
And that is The World This Hour.
For CBC News, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
Thanks for listening.
