The U.S. has announced new tariffs against one of Russia's strategic partners, India. And the White House says it expects to make an announcement soon on whether direct sanctions against Russia would proceed this week. The pressure on the Kremlin comes as Donald Trump's envoy held talks in Moscow today aimed at reaching a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Tom Perry reports. A Kremlin spokesperson says Russia received some signals from Donald Trump and sent some signals in response, as Trump's envoy, Steve Whitkoff, met for three hours with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Moscow. This was Whitkoff's fifth trip to Russia in recent month. So far, Moscow has shown no sign it's prepared to end its war in Ukraine. Trump has given Russia until the end of this week to agree to a ceasefire or face increased sanctions. That includes secondary sanctions against countries that do business with Russia. Trump made good on that threat today. He announced an additional 25% tariff on India, which buys Russian oil. India calls
Starting point is 00:01:34 the U.S. measures unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable, and says it will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests. Tom Perry, CBC News, Washington. Mexico's president, Claudia Shanebaum, says she has had a very good meeting with Canada's top ministers, foreign affairs Minister Anita Anand and finance minister Francois Philippe Champagne visited Mexico to discuss trade. But Shanebaum has ruled out a bilateral trade agreement between the two countries. She says the trade deal with the United States, Canada and Mexico is enough. Shane Baum also says she will soon host a visit by Prime Minister Mark Carney, although his office says the trip is not likely to happen in the coming days.
Starting point is 00:02:24 It's been a hot and dry summer across Canada, triggering wildfires and water advisories from coast to coast. As Nicole Williams reports, forecasters expect this trend to continue throughout August. It's been too dry for too long for too much of the country. Environment Canada, climatologist David Phillips says it's those dry conditions wreaking havoc across the country. In Newfoundland and Labrador, that means at least three ongoing fires, have now forced hundreds of people to evacuate their communities. The province asking people to avoid burning anything outdoors while emergency crews tried to manage the worsening situation.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Minister of Public Safety, John Hagee. It's fair to say the province is a tinderbox at the moment. People really need to be extremely careful. Nova Scotia officials are asking people there to do the same. The province has banned hiking and driving in wooded areas over concerns of dry conditions. In BC, cooler temperatures and scattered showers are helping firefighters get the situation there under control for now. But warmer and drier conditions are expected to return by the end of the week. Starting point is 00:03:37 Several pistachio products are being recalled after salmonella infections sent nine people to hospital and sickened dozens more. The list includes the viral pistachio and canafay milk chocolate bar that's made by a Dubai. brand. It was distributed in Quebec, but it's also available online. Health Canada says if you have that chocolate, don't eat it. A list of recalled products is available on the CBC website. The Vancouver Whitecaps have signed a soccer superstar. White Cups, let's make history. A promotional ad features Thomas Muller. He is known as an attacking mid-fielder who spent much of his career with Byron Munich. Mueller has amassed 13 Bundesliga tight. titles, two Champions League titles, and one FIFA World Cup trophy over his career.
Starting point is 00:04:27 The White Caps say he has signed for the remainder of 2025, and the agreement includes a designated player option for 2026.
