The White House says President Donald Trump could meet with Russia's Vladimir Putin as soon as next week.
But no date or location has yet been set.
The news comes after Trump's envoy met Putin in Moscow in an attempt to broker the end of fighting in Ukraine.
Tom Perry reports.
A Kremlin spokesperson says Russia received some signals from Donald Trump
and sent some signals in response as Trump's envoy, Steve Whitkoff, met for three hours with
Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. This was Witkoff's fifth trip to Russia in recent
month. So far, Moscow has shown no sign it's prepared to end its war in Ukraine. Trump has given
Russia until the end of this week to agree to a ceasefire or face increased sanctions. That
includes secondary sanctions against countries that do business with Russia. Trump made good on that
threat today. He announced an additional 25% tariff on India, which buys Russian oil. India calls
the U.S. measures unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable, and says it will take all actions
necessary to protect its national interests. Tom Perry, CBC News, Washington. Mexico's president,
Claudia Shane Baum, says she has had a very good meeting with Canada's top ministers. This happened
yesterday. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and finance minister Francois Philippe Champagne visited
Mexico to discuss trade. But Shane Baum has ruled out a bilateral trade agreement between the two
countries. She says the trade deal with the United States, Canada and Mexico is enough.
Shane Baum also says she will soon host a visit by Prime Minister Mark Carney, although his office says
the trip is not likely to happen in the coming day.
Well, it's been a hot and dry summer across Canada.
This has been triggering wildfires and water advisories from coast to coast.
As Nicole Williams reports, forecasters expect this trend to continue throughout August.
It's been too dry for too long for too much of the country.
Environment Canada, climatologist David Phillips, says it's those dry conditions wreaking havoc across the country.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, that means at least three ongoing.
fires which have now forced hundreds of people to evacuate their communities. The province asking
people to avoid burning anything outdoors while emergency crews tried to manage the worsening
situation. Minister of Public Safety, John Hagey. It's fair to say the province is a tinderbox
at the moment. People really need to be extremely careful. Nova Scotia officials are asking people
there to do the same. The province has banned hiking and driving in wooded areas over concerns of
dry conditions. In BC, cooler temperatures and scattered showers are helping firefighters get the
situation there under control for now. But warmer and drier conditions are expected to return
by the end of the week. Nicole Williams, CBC News, Ottawa. An Army Sergeant shot and wounded
five soldiers at a base in Georgia. Parts of Fort Stewart in Southeast Georgia were locked down
this morning after reports of an active shooter. The fort is home to thousands of soldiers as well as their
families. John Lubis is the commanding general of Fort Stewart. He says all five victims are
in hospital. Thankfully, all are in stable condition and all are expected to recover. The alleged
shooter is in custody. We have reestablished security. I have lifted all lockdown measures on
Fort Stewart, and there is currently no threat to the local community. Officials say the shooter
used his personal handgun and not a military-issued weapon. The Vancouver white caps have signed a
soccer superstar. White Cups, let's make his team.
A promotional ad features Thomas Mueller. He is known as an attacking midfielder who spent
much of his career with Byron Munich. Mueller has amassed 13 Bundesliga titles, two
Champions League titles, and one FIFA World Cup trophy over his career. The white caps say
he has signed for the remainder of 2025 and the agreement includes a designated player option for
26. And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
