From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Hurland. Donald Trump is threatening to hike tariffs on countries that continue to trade closely with Russia. The U.S. President already made good on that threat Wednesday by announcing an additional 25% tariff on India. It's part of an effort to pressure Russia into ending the war in Ukraine, but there are signs he's now considering a more hands-on
Starting point is 00:00:59 approach. Peter Armstrong explains. When Donald Trump was campaigning for president, he repeatedly said he'd end the war in Ukraine on day one. He took office 199 days ago, and the fighting in Ukraine rages on. Trump's envoy, Steve Whitkoff, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday. Both sides agreed the talks were constructive, but nothing concrete emerged. The New York Times reported Trump told European leaders he intends to meet with Putin and Zelensky as soon as next week. In the Oval Office, he was asked if those two leaders had agreed to that meeting. It's a very good prospect that they will. And we haven't determined where, but we had some very good talks with President Putin today. And there's a very good chance that we could be
Starting point is 00:01:46 ending the round, ending the end of that road. But Trump says he's believed a breakthrough was imminent before, only to be disappointed. And he admits he doesn't know if this time will be any different. Peter Armstrong. CBC News. A U.S. Army sergeant shot and wounded five soldiers at a base in Georgia. Parts of Fort Stewart were locked down Wednesday after reports of an active shooter. The base is home to thousands of soldiers as well as their families. John Lubis is commanding general of Fort Stewart. He says all five victims are in hospital. Thankfully, all are in stable condition and all are expected to recover. The alleged shooter is in custody. We have reestablished security. I have lifted all lockdown measures. is on Fort Stewart, and there is currently no threat to the local community. Officials say the shooter used his personal handgun and not a military-issued weapon. His motivation is not clear. About 400 homes are under evacuation order in British Columbia.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Ravi Parmar is the BC Minister of Forests. He says there are 120 active wildfires across the province, but officials are putting their resources towards one in particular, Wesley Ridge near Cameron Lake on Vancouver Island. This fire is burning on steep and challenging terrain, and the BC Wildfire Service has deployed heavy equipment, helicopters, air tankers, structure protection, and over 200 personnel. Parmar says there is some relief coming to parts of BC in the days ahead, including cooler temperatures and some rainfall. Newfoundland and Labrador is dealing with three wildfires across the province,
Starting point is 00:03:24 a fire near Kingston and Conception Bay North has doubled in size, while two others are being held. The province is also considering a temporary ban on ATVs. Victoria Mboko has done it. The 18-year-old Canadian tennis player has advanced to the finals of the National Bank Open in Montreal. Beating her opponent in the semis tonight, Sarah Levitt, was there. She has done it again, the new Canadian queen of the court. Victoria Mboko now onto her first ever.
Starting point is 00:03:58 major final in the big leagues. The storybook continues. The 18-year-old came into Montreal's National Bank open relatively unknown, but her smashing success has won over the crowd. She says she's grateful for it. Playing in front of the home crowd obviously has its advantages. You know, you always have everyone pumping you up as much as they can. Tournament director Valéry Tetrault has watched it all with excitement.
Starting point is 00:04:25 Just a couple months ago, she was probably the one still talking about who her role models were. Mboko has gained quite the fan base, and her success at this tournament means she's insured a spot at the U.S. Open's main draw at the end of the month, a first for her at a grand slam. But right now, the finals here in Montreal.
