U.S. President Donald Trump is doubling tariffs on India for continuing to buy Russian oil. You're going to see a lot more. You're going to see a lot more. You're going to see so much secondary sanctions. Trump says Indian imports will be taxed at 50 percent, one of the highest tariffs of any country trading with the U.S. He says additional duties on China, another strategic trading partner of Russia, could be
Starting point is 00:01:07 coming soon. The secondary tariffs are part of Washington's effort to pressure the Kremlin into ending its war in Ukraine. Trump says talks in Moscow Wednesday were productive, adding he might meet President Vladimir Putin in person. The road was long and continues to be long, but there's a good chance that there will be meeting very soon. Russia says talks with the U.S. were constructive. The war in Gaza is reverberating around the world, and in this country, more signs of that spillover are in a new report on
Starting point is 00:01:40 Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian, and anti-Arab racism. It found a rise in incidents following the Hamas attacks against Israel and the ongoing fighting in Gaza. Rafi Bukhanian has more. You've seen a culture of swift demonization. Nadia Hassan says she's only seen. it get worse in the last two years. She's the chair of the Islamophobia research hub at York University in Toronto. Its new report documents dozens of Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian incidents since October 2023. It also cites numbers such as those from Statistics Canada, mentioning a 94% increase in hate-motivated crimes against Muslims in Canada in 2023. The report has recommendations. They include coming up with the definition of anti-Palestinian
Starting point is 00:02:26 racism distinct from Islamophobia, and also recognizing May 15th as Nakba Day. The Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs says Ottawa should focus on other measures, like increasing security supports for vulnerable communities, criminalizing the glorification of terrorism and ensuring police enforce the law. Starting point is 00:03:01 Anita Anand and finance minister Francois Philippe Champagne visited Mexico to discuss trade. But Mexico has ruled out a bilateral trade deal between the two countries. She says the trade agreement with the United States, Canada and Mexico is enough. A new study is highlighting the impact of wildfires on people's health. Researchers' folks, focused on the fires that ripped through Hawaii in 2023 and Los Angeles in 2025. Jennifer Yun reports. Oh, my gosh, look at the harbor. It's been two years since wildfires devastated the town of Lahaina and Maui, Hawaii.
Starting point is 00:03:43 It was one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history. And new research suggests, even for those who survived, health effects lingered. A study published in the medical journal, Jama, says, their lungs were not functioning at full capacity six to 14 months after the fires were extinguished. Half of them showed signs of depression. Dr. Courtney Howard isn't surprised. The Yellowknife Emergency Room physician researches wildfire in health.
Starting point is 00:04:09 She says this study is the latest in an increasing body of evidence showing how wildfires can hurt our health. It gives us the information we need to start to really resolutely look at how we can decrease these deaths now and into the future. Howard and the authors of the study say governments should brace health care systems for other climate-related disasters. Jennifer Yun, CBC News, Toronto. Canadian tennis player Victoria Mboko won her semi-final match at the National Bank Open in Montreal tonight.
