Prime Minister Mark Carney is meeting with Métis leaders in Ottawa today, the latest in a series of summits with native groups to discuss

But first, Carney talked about the wildfires and gave a shout out to some people who've helped protect residents of the fire zones. I'd like to salute the hundreds and hundreds of Canadian Armed Forces personnel across Canada that have helped fight these fires, helped first responders, help volunteers and communities, helped evacuate literally over 10,000 people who've been in danger and will continue to work with their provincial, territorial, and indigenous leadership to protect homes, lives, and communities. Carney says the meetings, including the one today, come as the country needs to unite. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is meeting with a security cabinet today,
Starting point is 00:01:25 looking at expanded military action in Gaza. A move his army chief is opposing. Susan Armistin is following the story in Tel Aviv. The government plan backed by Benjamin Netanyahu is being characterized as a five-month military maneuver that will push into Gaza City and try to move a million people towards the south. These are areas not currently held or controlled by the IDF
Starting point is 00:01:49 and it's believed where the remaining 20 surviving hostages are held. Last night, the families of hospitals. hostages scuffled with police during a protest around the Israeli military headquarters in Tel Aviv. We need your help that this time all 50 hostages will be released. They've called Netanyahu's plan a disastrous decision. It could still be modified or changed. The move also signals the government has no current expectation for successful ceasefire talks. Hamas has hardened its position in recent days, saying it will not disarm before the guarantee of a Palestinian state.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Egypt reports nearly a thousand trucks have been able to cross into Gaza over the last 10 days, but far below the basic needs of civilians. Susan Ormiston, CBC News, Tel Aviv. U.S. President Donald Trump says he wants a new updated census for his country that doesn't include illegal immigrants. Writing on his social media platform, Trump says he's instructed his Department of Commerce to begin work on a new and highly accurate census based on figures from the 2024 election. But he says anyone living in the country illegally will not be counted in the census. A number of people who bought digital gift cards for Costco say their cards have been drained of all the cash.
Starting point is 00:03:06 The retailer is saying little about what happened. So reporter Sophia Harris went digging and she found the problem may be gift card fraud. I checked my balance and was shocked to find that there were $0 on there. Shelly Shoe of Perth, Ontario got a nasty surprise. in June, she discovered someone had drained the roughly $200 on her digital Costco gift card, known as a shop card. There are dozens more customer complaints online about drained shop cards. CBC News spoke with five affected customers. They said Costco offered few details about what happened, and two, including Shoe, are still fighting for a refund.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Yeah, I've been really disappointed with how Costco has managed this situation. Costco didn't respond to repeated requests for comment, but in a letter sent to some victims, the retailer stated, its ongoing investigation indicates that a limited number of digital shop cards may have been used by unauthorized individuals. The Retail Council of Canada says Canadians lose millions of dollars each year due to gift card fraud. And those victims don't always get their money back. Sophia Harris, CBC News, Toronto.
