Starting point is 00:00:00 It's summer, and it's going to be a hot one in Canadian politics. I'm Catherine Cullen. Join me and some of CBC's best political reporters as we bring you all new summer programming, focused on everything from negotiating with Donald Trump to Canada's climate goals, to the future of the Senate, and more. We'll talk to the chief of the defense staff and a top senator. We'll visit the Maritimes to learn about the future of energy production there. Catch the House Saturdays wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Gina Louise Phillips. New evacuation orders have been issued in Newfoundland as wildfires continue to burn.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Residents in Conception Bay North, Okra Pit Cove, and Salmon Cove are told to immediately leave their communities. Another wildfire, near Kingston, has grown to more than 2,100 hectares. Public Safety Minister John Hagee addressed rumors that some of the fires were deliberately set. We're hearing a lot on social media about people who allege they know who is setting fires, and yet these people will not talk to the RCMP. If you know, you should tell, because if you don't, you're helping them. The RCMP are now looking into the fire-threatening Small Point Adams Cove Blackhead Broadcove, as well as several other smaller bushfires that were reported earlier this summer.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Conservative leader Pierre Pollyev says Prime Minister, Mark Carney has not accomplished enough in the five months he's been in office. He promises conservatives will introduce their own bill in the fall to speed up economic development. The Canadian Sovereignty Act seeks to legalize economic development. Polyev says Canada can't wait till everyone is on side. He is demanding to speed up development of energy and mining projects. Conservatives are calling on Prime Minister Cardi to have pipeline construction underway for at least two projects. and to have at least one new natural gas liquefaction project
Starting point is 00:02:03 and a road to the ring of fire in Ontario under construction by the first anniversary of him taking office. Pollyev spoke in Alberta where he is running in a by-election. U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping new tariffs on dozens of countries are now in effect. Right now we're living the nightmare that we had hoped wouldn't come to be. You kind of like wake up in the morning and you're like, no, that wasn't real. Swiss businessman Sasha Davidoff is among many people bracing for the economic impact.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Like Canada, Switzerland failed to reach a trade deal before the White House's imposed deadline. The U.S. will now tax imports from that country at close to 40%. Trump has announced eight trade agreements over the past five months, although details are scarce. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent today hinted at the window that more details and more deals may be closing. The trade deals are largely done, and now we can really hone in on the affordability. U.S. markets appeared to shrug off the new tariff regime, with stocks opening higher this morning. The Kremlin confirms U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin,
Starting point is 00:03:20 have agreed to meet in the coming days. The goal is to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. The date and location for the meeting have not yet been set, but Putin says United Arab Emirates could host that summit. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his goal is to take control of all of Gaza. But he insists Israel will hand over governance to an Arab body once it establishes a security perimeter. Netanyahu's proposal is being discussed by his security cabinet today, and Susan Ormiston is following that story in Tel Aviv.
Starting point is 00:03:54 The government plan backed by Benjamin Netanyahu is being characterized as a five-month military maneuver that will push into Gaza City and try to move a million people towards the south. These are areas not currently held or controlled by the IDF and it's believed where the remaining 20 surviving hostages are held. Last night the families of hostages scuffled with police during a protest around the Israeli military headquarters in Tel Aviv. We need your help that this time all 50 hostages. just will be released. They've called Netanyahu's plan a disastrous decision. It could still be modified or changed. The move also signals the government has no current expectation for successful ceasefire talks. Hamas has hardened its position in recent days, saying it will not disarm before the guarantee of a Palestinian state. Susan Ormiston, CBC News, Tel Aviv.
Starting point is 00:04:45 And that is the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Gina Louise Phillips. Thank you.
