Edmonton police have charged the chief of Soutena First Nation with two counts of sexual assault.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Rory Albert Whitney is accused of assaulting one male in 1994 and a second male in 2005. The CBC's Karina Zapata has the details. Edmonton Police Service says the offenses date back to 1994 and 2005, involving a 33-year-old male and a 38-year-old male. Both are from Soutina Nation and are known to the suspect, but do not know each other. Police in Edmonton learned about the first incident last year, and this spring they began to investigate the second incident. 71-year-old Roy Albert Whitney, Soutina Nation Chief, was arrested by Edmonton Police in Calgary yesterday. He is charged with two counts of sexual assault. Police say investigators believe more people may have been affected, given Whitney's role as chief.
Starting point is 00:01:26 They're asking anyone who may have been victimized to contact the Edmonton Police. service. Police say they can provide additional support. Whitney has been chief of Soutena Nation since 1984. He was a banned counselor for eight years before that. CBC News has reached out to Soutena Nation for comment. Corina Zapata. CBC News, Calgary. Conservative leader Pierre Pollyev says Prime Minister Mark Carney has not accomplished enough in the five months he's been in office. He promises conservatives will introduce their own bill in the fall to speed up economic development. The Canadian Sovereignty Act seeks to legalize economic development. Pollyev says Canada can't wait till everyone is on side.
Starting point is 00:02:08 He's demanding to speed up development of energy and mining projects. Conservatives are calling on Prime Minister Carty to have pipeline construction underway for at least two projects and to have at least one new natural gas liquefaction project and a road to the ring of fire in Ontario under construction by the first anniversary of him taking office. Polyev spoke in Alberta, where he is running in a by-election. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel intends to take control of all of Gaza.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Netanyahu's security cabinet is discussing the proposal today, but the Prime Minister insists Israel does not want to keep the enclave forever. We want to have a security perimeter. We don't want to govern it. We don't want to be there as a governing body. We want to hand it over to Arab forces that will govern it properly without threatening us and giving Gazans a good life. The country's Army Chief is warning against the move, concerned about endangering the lives of remaining hostages as well as IDF soldiers. Hamilton, Ontario is celebrating a homegrown basketball superstar.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Shea Gilgis Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to this year's NBA championship. And now he's received a hero's welcome in his hometown. Philip Lee Shanock was there. Crowds packed Hamilton Stadium to see NBA superstar Shea Gilgis Alexander or SGA get the city's highest honor. Hamilton Mayor Andrew Horvath presented him with the key to the city and officially declared August 7th Shea Gilgis Alexander Day. The 26-year-old NBA All-Star was the first Canadian to be named Finals MVP, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to the League Championship. Gildjus Alexander also claimed the league's scoring title and was the regular season MVP. The only other players who've done that in a single season are Shaquille O'Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan.
Starting point is 00:04:08 He's only the second Canadian to be named League MVP, and he was the key to Team Canada's bronze medal finish in the Fiba World Cup, Canada's first medal ever. Gildjus Alexander says the coaching and encouragement he got in Hamilton shaped who he is. Chanock, CBC News, Hamilton, Ontario. Can she do it again? That's the question. Canadian tennis fans are asking as Victoria Embaco steps onto the court for the National Bank Open Final. The 18-year-old grabbed the nation's attention, beating three Grand Slam champs. Fans are now hoping she'll make it four as she battles Naomi Osaka this hour.
