Starting point is 00:00:37 From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Faye. World leaders are urging Israel to reconsider its decision to take control of Gaza City, a move that will push Israel closer to occupying the entire Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News, that is his objective.
Starting point is 00:00:57 That's what we want to do. in order to remove Hamas there and to pass it to civilian governance. That is not Hamas and not anyone advocating the destruction of Israel. The CBC's Crystal Gamansing has more. Speaking to the BBC Breakfast Television program, Shana Lowe with the Norwegian Refugee Council says the past 22 months have already been hellish in Gaza. The Israeli government is not listening. It's not listening to the consensus of its citizens.
Starting point is 00:01:26 It's not listening to the consensus of the international community. UK Prime Minister Kirstarmer called Israel's plan to escalate its offensive in Gaza wrong. A statement issued early this morning said in part, this action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or help secure the release of the hostages. It will only bring more bloodshed. UN spokesperson Alessandro Volucci called the decision deeply alarming. It is clear that this would risk catastrophic consequences.
Starting point is 00:01:56 for millions of Palestinians and could further endanger the lives of the remaining hostages. Crystal Gamansing, CBC News, London. Today's the deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Trump's threatened new tariffs on Russia and its trading partners. But as Tom Perry explains, he's not given any indication so far, what he'll do. At this point, not really. I mean, back in late July, Trump gave Vladimir Putin until really this week to agree to a cease. fire in Ukraine or face these new U.S. sanctions. Russia has not done that, obviously. But this
Starting point is 00:02:32 week we did see Trump's envoy, Steve Whitkoff, flat of Moscow for talks with the Russian president. The White House says the meeting went well. The Kremlin says it was constructive. And Moscow's now proposing that Trump and Putin get together as early as next week for a meeting possibly in the United Arab Emirates. Now, the White House says Trump is open to that, but nothing has been agreed to. Trump was asked about all this yesterday, and here's what he said. Does Putin have to meet with Zelensky in order and before you and Putin have to meet? No. To meet with him, he doesn't have to agree to meet with Zelisky.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Is that what you're saying? No, he doesn't. So Trump's sounding, I guess, more flexible about what might come next. Ukraine, of course, wants to be part of any discussions that could decide its future or even its survival. Tom Perry, CBC News, Washington. Air Canada and the Union representing 10,000 of its flight attendants are set to resume talks today. They're trying to avoid a strike from starting in just over a week's time. Both sides say they're optimistic they'll be able to prevent a work stoppage, and the airline says it is not yet considering canceling or postponing any flights.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Victoria Mbocco is the new Women's National Bank Open champion, the 18-year-old from Burlington, Ontario, came in as a wildcard entry and ended up taking home the trophy, becoming just the third Canadian woman to do so. Sarah Levitt reports from Montreal. She's officially the United States of Montreal. She's officially the year. youngest Canadian ever to win the National Bank Open, Victoria Mbucco, with a match that had the Montreal crowd on their feet. Hence, clasping her face in shock, the teenager drank it all in. To do something like this and to tell my younger self that just to keep training, keep believing in yourself and like, oh my God, I'm getting so emotional right now.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Mbucco started her year outside of the top 300 women tennis players in the world. win means she'll skyrocket up to an expected 24 spot, and she's going home with winnings to the tune of $750,000 U.S. dollars. But on Mboko's mind, more tennis. The U.S. Open is just around the corner, after all. It's Mbocomian, Montreal. Sarah Levitt's CBC News, Montreal. And that is your world this hour.
Starting point is 00:04:52 For CBC News, I'm Claude Fague. Thank you.
