Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the dudes club, a brotherhood supporting men's health and wellness. Established in the Vancouver Downtown East Side in 2010, the dudes club is a community-based organization that focuses on indigenous men's health, many of whom are struggling with intergenerational trauma, addiction, poverty, homelessness, and chronic diseases. The aim is to reduce isolation and loneliness, and for the men to regain a sense of pride and purpose in their lives. As a global health care company, Novo Nordisk is dedicated to driving change for a healthy world. It's what we've been doing since 1923.
Starting point is 00:00:38 It also takes the strength and determination of the communities around us, whether it's through disease awareness, fighting stigmas and loneliness, education, or empowering people to become more active. Novo Nordisk is supporting local changemakers because it takes more than medicine to live a healthy life. Leave your armor at the door. Watch this paid content on CBC. Jim. From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Riley Leachuk.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Israel's government is defending its decision to expand military operations in Gaza. Its security cabinet has approved a plan that would see the country's military move into one of the few remaining areas in Gaza it does not currently control. Chris Rehaz reports. It's all that's left of Gaza City, tents and rubble. Those who live here are barely hanging on, and with Israel's plan to take it over, they could be forced to leave. Where should we go? This is shameful, says Sabrine Naim, who, like so many Gazans, has already been displaced many times since the start of the war. From leaders across the globe disapproval, including from Prime Minister Mark Carney. We join many others in viewing that this is wrong. It is going to put the lives of the hostages at greater.
Starting point is 00:01:58 risk. Germany, a major arms supplier to Israel, says it will no longer export military equipment that Israel can use in the Gaza Strip. The EU and the UK urging Israel to reconsider. Israel already controls most of Gaza. Its latest plan would mean an almost complete takeover of the enclave. Chris Reyes, CBC News, London. Prime Minister Mark Carney is giving members of the Canadian military arrays. Speaking at CFB Trenton and Eastern Ontario, he announced an 8% bump for officers in ranks from Colonel and above, a 13% raise for officers from Lieutenant Colonel and below, and a 20% raise for privates in the regular forces.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Advanced polls open Friday for the federal by-election in the Alberta riding of Battle River Crowfoot. Conservative leader Pierre Paulyev is one of more than 200 candidates. The CBC's Acton Clarkin spoke with some voters at a polling station in Drumheller. This riding has historically been a conservative stronghold. Most people probably would feel that that's the way they expected will stay. Expectations aside, some voters want to see at least a competitive race. I hope it's close, is what I hope for, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:12 One feeling many voters have is frustration, with being back at the polls less than four months after April's federal election. Conservative incumbent Damien Couric won back then, but gave up his seat so that Polyev could run here. after Pollyev lost his longtime Ottawa area seat. I don't like that political game playing. Some Pollyev supporters, however, feel differently. That's the way the system works. I mean, you get a second chance this way. Advance polling locations will be open throughout the riding until Monday night.
Starting point is 00:03:42 After that, voters will have to wait to cast their ballots on Election Day, August 18th. Acton-Clarkin, CBC News, Drum Heller. U.S. President Donald Trump says a meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will happen next Friday. In a social media post, Trump says discussions on ending the war in Ukraine will take place in Alaska. It would mark the first time the pair have met face to face since 2019. Trump previously said a deal would involve some swapping of territories, adding that an agreement was, quote, very close. And firefighters in California are trying to get a rapidly spreading brush fire under control.
Starting point is 00:04:20 The Canyon fire broke out in Ventura County Thursday afternoon and ballooned to more than 2,000 hectares in size. It's located about 100 kilometers northwest of downtown Los Angeles and has prompted evacuations in the area. Homeowner Joseph Delt Leonardi says firefighters were able to save his home. The bulldozers were up on the hill for six or seven hours, just pushing brush around. And without these brave people, we would have been out. As of the most recent update, the blaze was zero percent contained. There are several major fires burning on the U.S. West Coast that have seen explosive growth in recent weeks. And that is your world this hour.
Starting point is 00:05:15 For CBC News, I'm Bradley Lechuk. Thank you.
