Starting point is 00:01:07 proudly waved the flags of their home province and territory during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Canada Games. Athletes will participate in 19 different sports throughout the next few weeks. The games aren't just about competition. It's also about experiencing other places and cultures, something Alberta athlete Sasha Pasoloski is excited for. I really can't wait.
Starting point is 00:01:33 I actually don't really know what to expect. But everybody that I've talked to told me that it was beautiful. So I'm pretty excited. There's a lot of excitement in the air as well as some smoke. A series of wildfires are still burning out of control in the province. Officials say the games will go ahead as scheduled, but they are keeping an eye on the conditions. Jessica Singer, CBC News, St. John's.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Heat warnings are in place for parts of B. C's Interior and Vancouver Island as crews continue to battle the Wesley Ridge Wildfire. Some communities could see daytime highs of up to 35 degrees today and Monday. The BC Wildfire Service says the hot, dry weather could intensify wildfire activity. Fire information officer Madison Dahl says firefighters are also up against difficult terrain. We are well-resourced and we work very closely with our partners as we have here. The Wesley Ridge Wildfire is burning. in different types of terrain. Some parts are inaccessible for heavy equipment. That's where we utilize ground crews and we depend on helicopter access. Hundreds of people have been out of their homes for over a week due to the fires. The U.N. Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting today to discuss Israel's plan for a new ground operation. It was originally scheduled to take place yesterday afternoon. It comes as Canada joined international partners in condemning Israel's plan to
Starting point is 00:02:57 take control of Gaza City. Israel's foreign ministry says that the move is aimed at beating Hamas and not to hold Palestinian territory for the long term. In the midst of trade turmoil with the U.S., Canada is looking to strengthen its relationship with Mexico. Last week, Canada's ministers of foreign affairs and finance visited top officials in Mexico, and now Alberta's premier has announced she's doing the same. Sarah Reid has more. We want to engage further with Speaking about his recent trip south, Canada's finance minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, says Canada wants to have a strong relationship with Mexico. Alberta's premier, Daniel Smith, also wants that for her province.
Starting point is 00:03:41 In a statement, Smith says she'll be making a similar trip with the goal of attracting new investment. You have to maintain the relationship. If you don't do the basic maintenance, you're in trouble. Carlo Dade is the director of international policy at the University of Calgary and a member of the Mexican Council of Foreign Relations. He says when it comes to critical trade, especially for Western Canada, Mexico plays an important part in helping diversify our market. Partnering with Mexico, well, the possibilities suddenly look a lot brighter.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Those possibilities are also thanks to the revised Trans-Pacific Partnership, which Dade says Canada isn't currently taking full advantage of. Sarah Reid, CBC News, Edmonton. Major League Baseball reached a month. milestone this weekend. A woman umpired a regular season game for the first time in the league's 122 year history. Jim Powell was the first base umpire for game one of yesterday's Florida Marlins Atlanta Braves double header.
