News the world this hour. I'm Wayne Tibido. There has been some good news and bad news on the
wildfires burning in Newfoundland and Labrador. Premier John Hogan says hot, dry, windy conditions
did lead to the growth in the biggest fire, the Kingston Fire. As of this morning, it had grown
to 4,895 hectares, and I think it's safe to say that's over 5,000 hectares now. And just to put it in
perspective. It was 3,000 hectares yesterday morning.
There were more structures lost, but they're not able to say exactly how many or where.
And that fire is expected to reach Oaker Pit sometime this evening.
The Martin Lake Fire grew slightly. Plains and helicopters are dropping water on areas where
there are cabins, and Hogan did have some good news there.
The Holy Root Fire now is being classified as being held.
It remains at 22 hectares with no report of growth.
and minimal fire behavior observed, and the fire is fully contained with hose lines.
Quebec has sent two water bombers but had to delay the arrival of two more because of maintenance issues,
and Ontario has sent a ground crew, but had to hold back two water bombers because of fires in their own province.
In New Brunswick and out-of-control fire burning near Merrimashie almost doubled in size yesterday,
and tender-dry conditions prompted the province to close crown lands and ask every,
everyone to stay out of the woods.
Officials say a spark can turn into a fire in just minutes.
And more hot, dry, windy weather is expected on Vancouver Island,
where fire crews are still trying to bring the Wesley Ridge fire under control.
Hundreds of people remain under evacuation orders.
Israeli's Prime Minister is out defending his plans to take over more of Gaza.
Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to international media at a news conference saying his plan,
is the best plan to end the war, and calling reports of starvation in Gaza lies.
Dominic Volaitis reports.
Ben Yomín Netanyahu said today's press conference was aimed at puncturing lies about the war in Gaza.
He claimed there are two remaining strongholds in the territory.
Given Hamas's refusal to lay down its arms, Israel is no choice but to finish the job
and complete the defeat of Hamas.
Netanyahu was speaking just days after his government,
prove the plan to expand military operations in Gaza, a plan that's been condemned by many
countries, including Canada, which warn Israel risks violating international law. Netanyahu said
operations will move fairly quickly. Safe zones will be established first, and he outlined
a three-step plan to increase aid into Gaza. But the Israeli PM flat out denied Gazans
are starving, saying Hamas, the United Nations and the international media are all.
all painting a false picture.
Dominic Valaisus for CBC News, London.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, local hospital officials say at least 26 Palestinians were killed today,
while seeking food at aid sites set up by the U.S.
and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Members of the Trump administration say the president has not ruled out inviting Ukraine's president
to Trump's Friday meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin,
U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Winkler.
Obviously, the decision is going to be made by President Trump.
He agreed to meet with President Putin in Alaska on Friday.
And if he thinks that that is the best scenario to invite Zelensky, then he'll do that.
You know, today's Sunday, the meeting's happening on Friday.
There's time to make that decision.
No decision's been made to this point.
U.S. ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker.
When initially excluded Zelensky said while he appreciated Trump's efforts,
any decision made without Ukraine were, quote, dead decisions, and Ukraine was not willing to give up territory.
And a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkey's northwestern province on Sunday.
Officials say the quake caused about a dozen buildings to collapse.
At least one person has died and 29 have been injured.
The quake could be fell 200 kilometers away in Istanbul and has been followed by aftershocks.
And that is your world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Wayne to vote.
I don't know.
