Newfoundland and Labrador is under wildfire emergency,
with four out-of-control wildfires in the province
and one that is now contained.
The Kingston fires are the most serious and growing rapidly.
Heather Gillis has the latest.
Even with three other out-of-control fires burning,
four water bombers, the province's entire fleet,
are douse and water on the Kingston fires
northern edge, trying to prevent further spread. An additional two from Quebec arrived this weekend
to help, but better coordination at the federal level is needed, says the head of Canada's
Association of Fire Chiefs. An office within the federal government to help coordinate and oversee
resources across Canada. The days where we used to say that they were unpreventable or unpredictable
or that the fire seasons were unprecedented, we can no longer say that anymore. Officials have
heftily increased fines for breaking the fire ban to $50,000 to $150,000 plus possible jail time.
Crews say that it could take days longer to contain these fires.

Australia is joining a growing list of nations planning to recognize a Palestinian state.
A two-state solution is humanity's best hope to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East
and to bring an end to the conflict, suffering, and starvation in Gaza.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanesey intends to make the recognition at next month's UN General Assembly.
He will be joining leaders from Canada, France, and the UK.
But Albanese is making it clear conditions must be met,
including a commitment that Hamas will have no involvement in any future state.
Air travelers may see picketing flight attendants today at airports in Toronto,
Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver. It's part of a national day of action. Last week, Air Canada
flight attendants voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike mandate. They could walk off the job
as early as August the 16th. A Regina couple has developed an app to support people on the road to
addiction recovery. It's called Alchemist One, offering a library of content from guided mediation
to personal stories from people in active recoveries. The app was created by
CEO Adam Geiger with co-CEO with CEO and partner Chelsea Galloway, both of whom have faced addiction
themselves. What happens when you exchange relapse with just that five minutes of mindful reflection,
you can really change everything because as we know when you, when relapse happens,
it can be long-lasting and pretty destructive. So yeah, we really just wanted to build something
that was that daily companion that lives in your pocket.
Alchemis I already has a growing community of close to 6,000 downloads.
With marijuana in Canada becoming more and more potent,
experts are warning about the risk of psychosis that comes with using the drug.
An article published today in the Canadian Medical Association Journal
aims to raise awareness among health care practitioners about who is at risk and how to treat it.
Alison Northcott reports.
In the Canadian Medical Association Journal,
psychiatrist Nicholas Fabiano from the University of Ottawa and his co-authors
point out cannabis has become five times more potent over the last two decades
with higher concentrations of the psychoactive component, THC.
With that jump, and when we know that the associations with THC concentration
and onset of psychosis or even schizophrenia is higher, it's pretty alarming.
Fabiano says a recent Ontario study suggested those who've ended up in the ER from
cannabis use face higher risks of developing schizophrenia. He says,
physicians and the general public need to know who is at risk and how to manage that.
Gibran Kolkar, an associate professor at Western University, says those most at risk of developing
problems are people with a history of mental disorders and young men.
The earlier the exposure to cannabis, the earlier the exposure to higher potency levels of
cannabis, the greater the risk.
