Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. from cbc news the world this hour i'm mike wise the white house is deploying the national guard to washington it is one of several measures taken by the u.s president to tackle crime that he says is rampant in the nation's capital donald trump said he'd also bring in the military if necessary lisa shing has more this is liberation day in dc and we're going to take our capital back U.S. President Donald Trump announcing he's placing the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and deploying hundreds of law enforcement officials, including from the National Guard and the FBI. They'll immediately begin massive enforcement operations targeting known gangs, drug dealers and criminal networks to get them the hell off the street.
Starting point is 00:01:19 He also promised to remove encampments, saying homeless people had to move out, though he did not specify where. Over the weekend, Washington mayor, Muriel Bowser, pushed back against Trump's plans. The priority is to show for us in an American city, we know he can do that here, but it won't be because there's a spike in crime. The U.S. President has long rallied against crime in the Capitol, although overall statistics show violent crime in D.C. hit a 30-year low last year. Lisa Sheng, CBC News, Washington. The U.S. President also says he will try to get some territory back for Ukraine, during talks with his Russian counterpart. Donald Trump says he will tell Vladimir Putin to end his war on Ukraine when they meet this Friday in Alaska. Trump calls it a feel-out meeting.
Starting point is 00:02:07 I'm going to go and see the parameters. Now, I may leave and say good luck, and that'll be the end. I may say this is not going to be settled. Trump again talked about land swaps between Russia and Ukraine, but he says he will inform Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders about his discussions with Putin, and it will be up to them to make a deal with Russia. A rescue operation is underway at a steel plant in Pennsylvania after an explosion this morning trapped several workers under the rubble. U.S. steel, which owns the plant, says dozens are injured. Emergency crews sent at least five people to hospital. There's no word on any fatalities. The facility south of Pittsburgh is the largest coking operation in North America,
Starting point is 00:02:50 producing fuel for steelmaking. New Brunswick is getting some help from other provinces to battle the 12 wildfires burning there, three of them out of control. Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Maine are sending a total of 30 firefighters to help out. Most forest activities have been banned across the province. Natural Resources Minister John Heron says the situation is unprecedented. We're very heartened that our neighbors have stepped up and offered help to us, just like we've done for decades. We're usually ones who actually send firefighters to other jurisdictions.
Starting point is 00:03:23 For the first time, we have actually asked. were boots on the ground. And four wildfires are also burning out of control across Newfoundland and Labrador. The Kingston Fire in Conception Bay North has grown to 5,000 hectares. Canada's Atlantic provinces, Southern Ontario, and Southern Quebec are all bracing for another day of punishing heat and humidity. Environment Canada is warning daytime highs could reach 35 degrees Celsius in some parts. The humidity is making that feel closer to 40. And Canadian Tennis Sensation Victoria Mboko became a household name when she won the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 18-year-old came from behind to defeat four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in three sets to claim her first ever WTA title.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Mboko is just the third Canadian woman to win the tournament that she says she grew up watching. To even think of winning it, it's absolutely amazing. and if I could tell my younger self that, hey, you have a shot at getting this trophy, I would have been so ecstatic. So I think it's super special. And if I could win any 1,000 tournament, it'd definitely be the one in Canada. And Boko says she is now looking forward to enjoying herself at the U.S. Open in New York next week. And that is your world this hour.
