The fire situation in Newfoundland and Labrador is getting worse.
A new one has ignited near St. John's, and it has thousands of residents on alert,
preparing to evacuate.
Heather Gillis reports.
Nearly 14,000 people just outside St. John's and Conception Bay South in Paradise are on alert.
As a new fast-moving fire is gaining ground, estimated at 200 hectares since igniting Monday, says Premier John Hogan.
Everybody in this area must be prepared to receive an evacuation order on any moment's notice.
The smoke is a stones throw away from homes and buildings.
The Premier says it closed part of the Trans-Canada Highway and threatened a crucial power line into the province's largest communities.
The Kingston fire on the Beta Verde Peninsula, the province's largest, has grown slightly to about 5,200 hectares since Sunday.
It's already destroyed more than nine homes.
Monday conditions so fierce, crews were pulled out for safety.
It's a quickly changing and volatile situation.
More water bombers and helicopters are coming from other provinces, but what's really needed is rain.
Heather Gillis, CBC News, St. John's.
We're following the results of a provincial by-election in Quebec.
The Party Quebecois and its candidate, Alex Boisano, have won the riding of Arthabasca
halfway between Montreal and Quebec City.
Boisano is a former Radio Canada journalist.
The governing Coalition Avenir Quebec lost its seat last night.
Premier Francois Legoe conceded defeat on behalf of his candidate, Kevin Brasseur.
They are dissu.
The Quebecois are deuce of our governmental.
Legoe says Quebecers are disappointed.
by his government because it has not improved public services in the province.
Colombia is mourning the death of presidential candidate Miguel Urube, who died on Monday from
injuries he had sustained during an assassination attempt.
The government is blaming one of the nation's rebel groups for the conservative candidate's
murder, which could have a big impact on next year's election.
Manuel Rueda reports from Bogota.
Dozens of people gathered at the spot where Senator Miguel Uriri,
was shot two months ago, to prey and light candles in his memory.
The senator's death has shocked Colombians who fear growing crime rates.
Analysts say that Uribe's assassination is tied to rebel groups in Colombia
becoming more powerful over the past three years.
Some of these groups have ties to violent Mexican drug cartels.
Sergio Usman, a political risk consultant, says that rebel groups are trying to intimidate
candidates who participate in next year's congressional and presidential elections.
It is a deliberate attempt to scare politicians, particularly those who speak strongly against them.
Jorge Restrepo, a professor at Bogotas Haviriana University, says that next year, voters will be looking for candidates who can offer concrete solutions to crime.
In my view, they will favor those candidates that have experience on rationality.
Manuel Rueda for CBC News, Bogota.
We've got a tragic update from Pennsylvania.
Thothole has risen after a series of explosions at a steel plant.
Matt Brown is the Allegheny County Chief of Emergency Services.

They did successfully find one worker and rescued that worker.
Unfortunately, as the rescue and the search continued here this evening,
I'm here to report that we do have now a second deceased.
Another 10 people were injured.
The explosion sent black smoke spiraling into the sky.
