Two highly visible fires broke out Monday evening in BC on Vancouver Island and the Okinaugan.
Three properties were put on evacuation alert near a Soyuz, the other a wildfire south of Port Albany,
grew significantly in size and forced campers to leave the area.
Mira Baines reports.
As hot temperatures continue across the province, two wildfires broke out in the evening.
The Mount Underwood fire southwest of Port Albany caused the highway to be closed between Port Albany and Bamfield.
With a wildfire, with the weather we're having, the winds and the heat, grown very fast.
Mike Carter is the co-CEO of the Port Albany Port Authority.
He says up to 300 people were told to evacuate China Creek Park and Campground.
We have many campers who have left their tents, their RVs.
They are their boats. We have cabins. We have infrastructure there. And of course, always a concern.
But number one concern with safety of our clients and staff. By dark, the Mount Underwood fire was
considered out of control and had grown to more than 6.3 square kilometers. In the Okinawameen,
an evacuation alert was issued for three properties near a wildfire which broke out close to Highway
3. Late in the evening, that fire near Assoyas was considered held. Murabaines, CBC News, Vancouver.
We've got the results of a provincial by-election in Quebec last night.
The Parti Quebecois and its candidate, Alex Boisano, won the riding of Arthabasca,
halfway between Montreal and Quebec City.
Thank you, everyone.
Merci Arthabasca L'Irable.
Vive the Quebec!
At his victory party, Boisano said long-lived Quebec.
Boisano is a former Radio Canada journalist
who will now sit as an opposition member in the Quebec legislature.
In a speech last night, PQ leader Paul Saint-Pier,
Plemondon accused Canada of working against the interests of Quebec, and he blamed former
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The riding was previously held by the governing Coalition
Avenir Quebec. U.S. President Donald Trump is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin
in Alaska Friday. They'll discuss the war in Ukraine. But Ukraine isn't invited to the meeting,
and that has European leaders concerned. 26 European heads of state released a statement
today. It says that Ukrainians must have the freedom to decide their future.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the leader of Israel is in denial about the
humanitarian situation in Gaza. Albinazi made the comment one day after announcing Australia
would recognize a Palestinian state for the first time. I spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu
he again reiterated to me what he has said publicly.
as well, which is to be in denial about the consequences that are occurring for innocent people.
And finally, a rocket plagued by years of development delays is set to take off tonight
from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The Vulcan rocket will carry satellites for the U.S. military and intelligence agencies.
Jennifer Glass reports.
On board the Vulcan is the U.S. Defense Department's first experimental navigation satellite
in nearly 50 years. The Vulcan rockets, two engines, and four boosters will generate three million
pounds of thrust to get it off the ground at Cape Canaveral. United Launch Alliance designed Vulcan
for exactly this purpose, says CEO Tori Bruno. This is the tough mission. One of our longest
duration missions ever. The mission will last more than seven hours, with Vulcan and its second
stage centaur carrying its cargo 35,000 kilometers above Earth. Vulcan was already years behind schedule
when it had its first two test launches last year.
And liftoff, the United Launch Alliance Vulcan rocket.
In October, a nozzle fell off a booster during liftoff, causing further delays.
ULA had hoped to launch 20 rockets in 2025.
Bruno says there will be nine.
But next year, the company is planning to launch two a month.
