Starting point is 00:00:36 I'm Nuridine. Two highly visible fires broke out Monday evening in BC on Vancouver Island and the Okanagan. The wildfire south of Port El-Burney grew significantly in size, forcing hundreds of campers to leave the area. Mira Baines reports. As hot temperatures continue across the province, two wildfires broke out in the evening.
Starting point is 00:00:57 The Mount Underwood fire southwest. of Port Albany caused the highway to be closed between Port Albany and Bamfield. With a wildfire, with the weather we're having, the winds and the heat, growing very fast. Mike Carter is the co-CEOO of the Port Albany Port Authority. He says up to 300 people were told to evacuate China Creek Park and Campground. We have many campers who have left their tents, their RVs, their boats. We have cabins. We have infrastructure there.
Starting point is 00:01:25 And, of course, always a concern. but number one concern with safety of our clients and staff. By dark, the Mount Underwood fire was considered out of control and had grown to more than 6.3 square kilometers. In the Okinawine, an evacuation alert was issued for three properties near a wildfire which broke out close to Highway 3. Late in the evening, that fire near Assoyos was considered held. Mira Baines, CBC News, Vancouver.
Starting point is 00:01:53 The United States and China have extended their tariff truce for another 90 days, Without the extension, triple-digit levies would have kicked in today. Some analysts say the uncertainty will see global businesses re-shore back to China. Han Shen Lin is China managing director at the Asia Group. If you're looking at it purely from a cost standpoint, looking at it from the ability to create new products rapidly at a cheaper cost, then the appeal of China is going to start looking stronger over time in a world where every country is facing higher and higher.
Starting point is 00:02:27 higher tariffs and greater uncertainty. The extension locks in a 30% tariff on Chinese imports, 10% for U.S. goods. Canada is not receiving a tariff reprieve, though. China announced a new levy on Canadian canola imports today, bringing the provisional rate to 75.8%. The move is an escalation in a year-long trade dispute with Ottawa, which began after Canada installed a tariff on Chinese electric vehicle imports last August. A three-day trial is underway in California after Governor Gavin Newsom decided to sue the Trump administration.
Starting point is 00:03:03 It's over the use of the U.S. National Guard during protest against migrant arrests. The trial comes as Trump is also deploying the National Guard in Washington, D.C. Steve Futterman reports. Just days after this, Donald Trump decided to send National Guard troops to Los Angeles to assist law enforcement. He is a full-blown assault on peace, on public. order. Almost immediately, state and local officials said the troops were not needed and would only escalate tensions. Governor Gavin Newsom tried but failed to get it stopped. Police do policing. Military for the battlefield. The trial, which is formally titled Newsom versus Trump,
Starting point is 00:03:42 is to determine whether the precedent's action violates a law dating back to the 1800s, which prevents the U.S. military in most cases from taking part in civilian law enforcement. Whatever the ruling is here in California, the case is very likely to find its way eventually to the U.S. Supreme Court, and it will have little effect on the latest actions in Washington, D.C., which is not a state and where the president has more power over the National Guard. Steve Fetterman for CBC News, Los Angeles. Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the leader of Israel is in denial about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Albanyese made the comment one day after announcing Australia would recognize a Palestinian state for the first time.
Starting point is 00:04:29 I spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu. He again reiterated to me what he has said publicly as well, which is to be in denial about the consequences that are occurring for innocent people. Albanese says the Netanyahu government's reluctance to listen to its allies contributed to Australia's decision to recognize a Palestinian state. For CBC News, I'm Nuridine Korine.
