Two highly visible fires broke out Monday evening in BC
on Vancouver Island and the Okanagan.
Mira Baines reports.
As hot temperatures continue across the province,
two wildfires broke out in the evening.
The Mount Underwood fire southwest of Port Albany
caused the highway to be closed between Port Albany and Bamfield.
With a wildfire, with the weather we're having,
the winds and the heat, growing very fast.
Mike Carter is the co-CEOO of the Port Albany Port Authority.
He says up to 300 people were told to evacuate China Creek Park and Campground.
We have many campers who have left their tents, their RVs, their boats.
We have cabins.
We have infrastructure there.
And, of course, always a concern.
But number one concern with safety of our clients and staff.
By dark, the Mount Underwood Fire was considered out of control
and had grown to more than 6.3 square kilometers.
In the Okinawine, an evacuation alert was issued for three properties near a wildfire
which broke out close to Highway 3.
Late in the evening, that fire near Assoyos was considered held.

The United States and China have extended their tariff truce for another 90 days.
Without the extension, triple-digit levies would have kicked in today.
Some analysts say the uncertainty will see global businesses
re-shore back to China. Han Shen Lin is China Managing Director at the Asia Group.
If you're looking at it purely from a cost standpoint, looking at it from the ability to create
new products rapidly at a cheaper cost, then the appeal of China is going to start looking
stronger over time in a world where every country is facing higher and higher tariffs in greater
uncertainty. This extension locks in a 30% tariff on Chinese imports, 10%
for U.S. goods. Now, Canada isn't receiving a tariff reprieve, though. China announced a new levy on
Canadian canola imports today, bringing the provisional rate to 75.8%. The move is an escalation in a year-long
trade dispute with Ottawa, which began after Canada installed a tariff on Chinese electrical
vehicle imports last August. U.S. President Donald Trump has announced he will be deploying
the U.S. National Guard in Washington, D.C., as well as taking over the city's police.
saying he is trying to rescue Washington from a wave of lawlessness.
Some analysts say while the move is legally permissible,
it's based on flimsy rationale.
Northeastern University professor Jeremy Paul
says evidence about an alleged spike in crime doesn't add up.
The existing statute is in place precisely for the reason
that we might have wild out-of-control rioting
or invasion by a foreign power.
we would want the president then to have all sorts of authority to repel an invasion.
Those things are not in place now.
Those are things are not happening.
Statistics show that violent crime shot up in 2023, but has been rapidly declining since.
A rocket plagued by years of development delays is set to take off tonight from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The Vulcan rocket were carry satellites for the U.S. military and intelligence agencies.
Jennifer Glass reports.
On board the Vulcan is the U.S.
Defense Department's first experimental navigation satellite in nearly 50 years.
The Vulcan rockets, two engines and four boosters will generate three million pounds of thrust
to get it off the ground at Cape Canaveral. United Launch Alliance designed Vulcan for exactly
this purpose, says CEO Tori Bruno. This is the tough mission. One of our longest duration
missions ever. The mission will last more than seven hours, with Vulcan and its second
stage centaur carrying its cargo 35,000 kilometers above Earth.
Vulcan was already years behind schedule when it had its first two test launches last year.
And liftoff, the United Launch Alliance Vulcan rocket.
In October, a nozzle fell off a booster during liftoff, causing further delays.
ULA had hoped to launch 20 rockets in 2025.
Bruno says there will be nine.
But next year, the company is planning to launch two a month.
