It's important to not only have them prepared, but in the event that you're gone to work for the day or out anywhere out from your home, it's not a bad idea to take your go-bag with you in the event there's an evacuation order that occurs while you're not at home and you're not able to get back to your house.
A new wildfire near Paddy's pond erupted Monday about 15 kilometers south of downtown St. John's. The fire quickly grew to about two square kilometers. Water bombers were dispatched to douse the flames and four.
more high capacity helicopters are due to arrive tonight. Fires across southern Europe are
proving to be deadly. At least two people were killed and thousands more forced to evacuate
due to the threat of wildfire. It's being made worse by a major heat wave, with temperatures
expected to soar above 40 degrees Celsius in several countries. Ross Colin reports from Paris.
August is traditionally the hottest month of the year in Europe, but this current heat wave is
exceptional. Temperature records have been smashed in the south of the continent, Bordeaux, France,
hitting 41 degrees Celsius. Spain is also being impacted by this deadly heat wave, with evacuees
rushing to safety after a fire tore through the town of Trescantos.
Francisco Martina Gire, a representative of the Spanish government, says the weather forecast
could make things worse, and he urges residents to exercise extreme caution. Other European
Countries are suffering. Thousands of firefighters are tackling three major blazers in Portugal
and Italian authorities had to close Mount Vesuvius to tourists on Monday after wildfires
broke out on the famous volcano slopes. Ross Cullen for CBC News, Paris.
Palestinian medics say an Israeli attack on Gaza City has killed at least 11 people. The bombardment
comes as the leader of Hamas heads to Cairo for talks to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire
plan. A previous round of talks in July ended in deadlock. Today, Israel's prime minister reiterated
a deal must include the disarming of Hamas and the release of Israeli hostages. Benjamin Netanyahu
also accused Hamas of lying about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Now, if we had a starvation
policy, no one in Gaza would have survived after two years of war. But our policy has been the
exact opposite. Our goal is not to occupy Gaza. Our goal is to free Gaza. Our goal is to free Gaza.
Freeed from Hamas terrorists.
In a joint statement today, 24 nations, including Canada,
say a crisis of famine has reached unimaginable levels.
They're urging Israel to allow unrestricted aid into the strip.
National Guard troops are arriving in Washington today
as part of Donald Trump's crackdown on crime.
In an unprecedented move,
the U.S. president has also put district police
under direct federal control.
Trump claims violent crime is rampant in the nation's,
Capitol. Mayor Mariel Bowser has pushed back against that claim, but she says D.C. is working
closely with the federal government to put resources to good use.
What I'm focused on is the federal surge and how to make the most of the additional officer
support that we have, and all in an effort to drive down crime.
Police data shows overall violent crime numbers in D.C. are at a 30-year low.
China is slapping a 75.8% tax on all imports of Canadian canola.
The temporary duty kicks in on Thursday.
Beijing says its preliminary investigation determined canola from Canada
was being sold below fair value in the Chinese market.
China buys almost all of its supplies of the product from Canada.
It's the latest escalation in a year-long trade dispute.
And that is it for the world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
Thank you.
