Starting point is 00:00:30 From CBC News, The World This Hour. I'm Mike Wise. If you have travel plans with Air Canada this weekend, you should start looking for alternatives. The union representing 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants issued a strike notice overnight. They planned to walk off the job this weekend. Anise Hedari reports. CUPY, the union representing Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants, has told the company they plan to walk out Saturday morning.
Starting point is 00:01:02 The goal here is not to issue strike notice and sit around for 72 hours. Wesley Lissoski is the president of QP's Air Canada component. He says Air Canada didn't come to the table with additional money after the last offers and counter offers were rejected. We also need to bargain a collective agreement. Air Canada said it is offering to now pay, at least partly, for hours worked before and after flights. In the days leading up to this strike notice,
Starting point is 00:01:28 the union said the offers didn't keep up with inflation. As for Air Canada passengers who are worried they won't have a flight to catch, they could be moved to another airline. Because a labor dispute is considered outside of the airline's control, Air Canada probably won't have to compensate passengers for the inconvenience or other costs. Any Sadari. CBC News, Calgary. Israel's military appears one step closer to a new offensive in Gaza. The military chief of staff has approved a plan. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is vowing a quick takeover of Gaza City. Starting point is 00:02:11 escalation to take over Gaza City, but he rejects criticism. He's pushing them out. Benjamin Netanyahu made his remarks in a television interview Tuesday night. This morning, a feud between the government and the chief of Israel's defense force, appears to be growing. Aal Zamir reportedly told generals that Netanyahu's family had marked him, and supporters of the Prime Minister want him out, according to Israeli media. Defense Minister Israel Katz said his conduct harms the military, and in a statement today cautioned all the critics and moral preachers opposing the war. The IDF chief initially opposed the prime minister's plan to take over all of Gaza. The cabinet ultimately approved to seize Gaza City, not the entire
Starting point is 00:02:53 strip. Talks have restarted in Cairo to try to revive a ceasefire plan, says Egypt's foreign minister. Susan Ormiston, CBC News, Jerusalem. There are new evacuation orders in Newfoundland and Labrador due to growing wildfires. Residents in parts of the town of Paradise just outside St. John's are being told to leave, while the wildfire near Paddy's pond continues to burn out of control. All this has fire crews feeling the strain. Peter Cowan has more. People are really scared. Marlene LeShane has her bag packed, ready to leave her home in Upper Island Cove on the Bavirt Peninsula at a moment's notice. The fire is just a five-minute drive away, but she's worried there aren't enough aircraft and crews trying to stop it.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Hot dry conditions in most of the province have created a tinder box. Yesterday afternoon, a new fire popped up in a cemetery in Spaniards Bay, an hour from St. John's. Aircraft had to divert away from other fires to snuff it out, and crews are tired. Help is on the way. 70 Canadian forces members are arriving to provide relief on the ground. And the Premier John Hogan says they're searching the continent for more air support. There's four high-capacity helicopters. Two Blackhawks are on route and should be here Thursday.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Those are coming from Utah. That's on top of aircraft already here from Quebec, Northwest Territories, and New Brunswick. Extra resources aren't cheap. The province says it's paying a million dollars a week for one helicopter from Manitoba. Peter Cowan, CBC News, St. John's. In British Columbia, a wildfire just south of Port Albarnie on Vancouver Island is raging out of control, growing to 14 square kilometers. It's closed the main road to Bamfield, cut power to the West Coast community, and forced the evacuation of a nearby campground. So far, the fire has not threatened any homes on Port Albany.
