Air Canada says it will soon start winding down service, canceling flight, and granting refunds
after the union representing 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants issued a strike notice overnight.
They planned to walk off the job this weekend.
Anisadari reports.
Cupid, the union representing Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants.
has told the company they plan to walk out Saturday morning.
The goal here is not to issue strike notice and sit around for 72 hours.
Wesley Lissoski is the president of QP's Air Canada component.
He says Air Canada didn't come to the table with additional money
after the last offers and counter offers were rejected.
We also need to bargain a collective agreement.
Air Canada said it is offering to now pay, at least partly,
for hours worked before and after flights.
In the days leading up to this strike notice,
the union said the offers didn't keep up with inflation.
As for Air Canada passengers who are worried they won't have a flight to catch,
they could be moved to another airline.
Any said R.E. CBC News, Calgary.
New evacuation orders are in effect in Newfoundland and Labrador due to wildfires.
Residents in the northern part of the town of Paradise outside St. John's were told to leave.
And Mayor Dan Bobbitt says other residents should be prepared to follow.
You must have, you know, your valuables,
medications, ready to go at a moment's notice, if an evacuation alert does come for your area.
Fire officials say Cruz did make some progress overnight in suppressing the Patty's Pond Fire just outside St. John's.
It did not grow overnight, but still remains out of control.
And a lack of rain is causing problems for crews battling wildfires right across the Atlantic provinces.
Brett Ruskin reports.
Today, a team of Nova Scotia firefighters are waking up here in New Bruns,
ready to help battle a pair of stubborn wildfires. They're part of the close cooperation we've
seen this past week between East Coast provinces. Right now, the fire outside Moncton is smaller
than in recent days down to 45 hectares. Meanwhile, in Miramashie, that fire has grown to more
than 1,100 hectares and has nearby residents on alert ready for a possible evacuation. It comes a day
after a fire ignited near Halifax's busy Bayer's Lake Shopping Center. Water bombers flew in from
New Brunswick to try to knock down the flames. That fire is still considered out of control,
but is now down to around 25 hectares in size. All of this under ongoing historic heat and
dangerous dryness. Today, communities across the Maritimes will again be sharing both resources
and the hope for rain in the forecast. Brett Ruskin, CBC News, Moncton, New Brunswick.
And in British Columbia, a wildfire just south of Port Albany on Vancouver Island has more than
doubled in size since yesterday, now covering over 14 square kilometers. About 300 people in a nearby
campground were told to evacuate. Well, the federal conservatives say they want to get rid of what they
call a two-tier sentencing system in Canada. They say non-citizens who are convicted in this country
are receiving lighter sentences because of their immigration status. Michelle Remper-Garner is the
critic for immigration, refugees, and citizenship. She plans to introduce a private member's bill.
Our bill will add a section to the criminal code, which will expressly outline that any potential impact of a sentence on the immigration status of a convicted non-citizen offender or that of their family members should not be taken into consideration by a judge when issuing a sentence.
Rampel Garner says she'll introduce that private members bill when Parliament resumes next month.
Mexico is deporting 26 high-ranking cartel figures to the United States.
They were accused of narcotics, smuggling, murder, and other crimes.
They were put on planes after the U.S. Department of Justice agreed not to seek the death penalty against any of the defendants.
This is the second time in recent months.
Mexican authorities have collaborated with U.S. officials.
The Trump administration is promising to get drugs off American streets,
and Mexico's government is trying to avoid more U.S. tariffs.
And that is your world this hour.
