Out-of-control wildfires are threatening communities across New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Tens of thousands of people remain on high alert as fire crews struggle to suppress the flames.
Karen Paul's reports.
Water bombers over the smoky skies of St. John's,
hours after police say they're looking for a man in a case of,
suspected arson. Four brush fires reported in the city's downtown, Danny Breen is the mayor of St. John's.
Knock it off. There's no need for this right now. Meanwhile, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier John
Hogan is imposing a ban on all-terrain vehicles on forested land until Sunday. We simply cannot afford
any further risks. Fines ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 and possible imprisonment. But evacuees Susan
Pilgrim says people need to follow the rules.
I mean, we've had 11 fires over the last three months.
So everybody is thinking in our case that somebody is setting.
Higher humidity in the St. John's area has meant decreased fire activity.
Officials hoping the blaze just outside the city will soon be under control.

A wildfire burning near the Bayers Lake Industrial Park in Halifax is under control.
officials say it was human-caused, even though a fire ban is in place.
Forest Protection Manager Scott Tingley says whoever lit the fire fled before crews turned up.
There was nobody in the area when the crews arrived on scene.
That makes it impossible to hold the person or people responsible to account.
And yet, that's frustrating to everyone.
Anyone violating the fire ban faces fines of $25,000.
A violent case of misconduct by Ontario jail,
guards is leading to convicted criminals getting lenient sentences.
Today, a man who murdered his ex-girlfriend will learn when he could be eligible for parole.
As Thomas Dagglo reports, the killer was one of nearly 200 inmates caught up in an aggressive
strip search. Connie Virgioni lost her 29-year-old daughter Vanessa at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.
Already on probation in 2022, he broke into her Brampton, Ontario home and killed her with a knife.
I am hoping the judge will not let him be eligible for parole prior to 20 years.
Linville-Ritchie pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, meaning an automatic life sentence.
But today the judge will decide how early he can apply for parole, potentially after only 10 years.
All of it under consideration because Richie was strip-searched in jail and left in his boxers for 37 hours.
His hands zip-tied.
They might be criminals, but they're human.
Premier Doug Ford is condemning the 2023 incident at Maplehurst jail.
An act of collective punishment by guards now under review.
One man has even filed a class action lawsuit, saying inmates are owed $30 million in damages.

Activists are recording cell phone video and putting out warnings that federal agents are in the area.

Residents are terrified. Certainly those that are homeless are terrified. And regular citizens
