Starting point is 00:00:37 I'm Nuridine Kournay. Out-of-control wildfires are threatening communities across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. Tens of thousands of people remain on high alert as fire crews struggled to suppress the flames. Karen Paul's reports. Water bombers over the smoky skies of St. John's, hours after police say they're looking for a man in a cage. of suspected arson. Meanwhile, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier John Hogan is imposing a ban on all-terrain vehicles on forested land until Sunday. We simply cannot afford any further risks. Fines ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 and possible imprisonment. But evacuees Susan Pilgrim says, people need to follow the rules. I mean, we've had 11 fires over the last three months. So everybody is thinking in our case that somebody is setting. Higher humidity in the St. John's area has meant decreased fire activity.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Officials hoping the blaze just outside the city will soon be under control. Karen Paul's, CBC News, St. John's, Newfoundland. Rain is expected to fall on an out-of-control wildfire on Vancouver Island Friday, but crews are focusing their efforts on protecting the community of Port Albany, B.C. A massive wildfire is over 10 kilometers from the town, with winds pushing the flames closer. Air Canada is expected to start grounding flights today. The airline is preparing for flight attendants to strike this weekend. The CBC's Linda Ward has more from Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Taking a look at the departures board here at Terminal 1. It is business as usual, at least so far, but we know that is definitely. definitely going to change through the day. Air Canada says they will be canceling flights today and tomorrow, this all part of a gradual shutdown ahead of a possible strike and lockout if no deal is reached by early Saturday. Air Canada says they've given passengers the option to change their flight from August 15th to August 18th if that ticket was purchased no later than yesterday for another flight between August 21st and September 12th. Now, if their flight is their flight, is cancelled. They'll try to rebook people on the first available flight with another airline.
Starting point is 00:03:02 They're saying passengers can also choose a refund. Linda Ward, CBC News, Toronto. Israeli far right minister, Bezal Smotrich has approved work on a settlement that would split East Jerusalem from the occupied West Bank. Israeli activist Hagid O'Fran says the construction would be devastating for the potential of a Palestinian state. It is located in the heart of the West Bank where the majority of the West Banker Palestinians live and this is essential for a future Palestinian state. Canada imposed sanctions on Smotritch in June.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Ukraine's President Volodemir Zelensky is looking to shore up European support ahead of a high-stakes summit in Alaska. European allies held a virtual call with Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump Wednesday. They failed to secure an invite for Zelensky, but expressed confidence that Trump heard their message that pressure must be applied to Russia in order to achieve
