Starting point is 00:00:00 So you're saying this airline forces the cabin crew to work for free. Tell me you're at least paid for boarding and de-plaining. No. Safety checks. No. Not even medical emergencies. No, but we'll always show up. But they're charging flyers more than ever.
Starting point is 00:00:17 And we're putting in thousands of unpaid hours. Where is that money going? Canada's airline, hey? Unpaid work is a true crime. A message from the Air Canada component of Cupy. from cbc news the world this hour i'm mandy sham Ontario is ordering the province's 60,000 public workers back to the office
Starting point is 00:00:43 currently provincial government employees are mandated to be in their offices at least three days a week that will increase to four days starting this fall and full time in January premier dug forward says it's time all the companies i've talked to from the banks to insurance companies to everyone else. Everyone needs to go back to work. Half the public service is already at work five days a week, and I want to thank them, and I just look forward to having everyone back to work. The move follows a similar announcement by Canada's four biggest banks headquartered in Toronto. Air Canada has started suspending flights as its flight attendants prepare for a potential strike this weekend. The airline has responded with a lockout notice.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Hundreds of flights are expected to be cancelled by Saturday's strike deadline. Ithel Mousa has more on the state of negotiations. That's very unfortunate. Air Canada officials were interrupted by QP members this morning, quietly holding protest signs. It appears negotiations between Canada's largest airline and the union representing more than 10,000 flight attendants remain at an impasse. They made the very last days of negotiations meaningless
Starting point is 00:01:54 by making unsustainable offers. Ariel Melul Wexler is Air Canada's Chief Human Resources Officer. They refused our offer of arbitration, and they sent us a strike notice as soon as they were legally able to do so. The main sticking points, wages, work rules, and unpaid hours. Natasha Stea is with Kupi. I really feel that the employer is counting on the government to come in, swoop in, and save all of this. Federal jobs minister, Patty Heidu, says she's met with both parties throughout the bargaining process, and she strongly urges them to come to an agreement.
Starting point is 00:02:29 It will move CSEBC News, Toronto. In Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley, around 40 homes are under an evacuation order due to an out-of-control wildfire. Officials say it was started by a lightning strike. Two helicopters are assisting ground crews trying to contain the fire and build a fire break. Officials in Port Auburny on Vancouver Island
Starting point is 00:02:50 are hoping favorable weather conditions will give them an advantage. The Mount Underwood fire is burning nearby and remains out of control. Julia Wong has the latest. We are 24-hour operation right now. Crews are working furiously to gain the upper hand on the Mount Underwood wildfire, according to Stefan Hood with BC wildfire. The fire is burning kilometers away from Port Albany on Vancouver Island. Several evacuation orders and evacuation alerts have been issued.
Starting point is 00:03:19 87 firefighters are using helicopters and heavy equipment as they try to contain the fire, But there is some positive news. The wind is looking to back off a little bit. The temperatures are dropping. The relative humidity is increasing. And hopefully all of this coming to a rain event that should help us. Hood warns the rain won't be enough to put out the wildfire. But he says it could buy them sometime and limit fire growth.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Julia Wong, CBC News, Port Albany, British Columbia. California's governor is moving forward with a plan to redraw the state's congressional maps. The new maps are an effort to help Democrats win five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterms. It's a response to a Republican-led redistricting effort in Texas. Proposed legislation there would potentially send five more Republicans to Congress to help them hold a slim U.S. House majority.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Governor Gavin Newsom says the plan is about protecting democracy. We're here because Donald Trump, on January 6th, six, try to light democracy on fire. He doesn't play by a different set of rules. He doesn't believe in the rules. We have got to recognize the cards that have been dealt. And we have got to meet fire with fire. Newsom has called for a special election for California residents to vote on the new maps in November. And that is the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Mandy Sham. Thank you.
